Tropic Thunder has its funny moments but misses the mark

Satires work best when they skewer sacred cows, the more sacred the better. But, with one notable exception, the cows in "Tropic Thunder" are far from sacred, which means the satire is far from funny when they are skewered.

Try fly fishing for reds on the early full moon high tide

Early morning, full-moon high tides made this week the perfect time to target redfish with the fly rod. Reds use the high tides to access normally dry areas of the salt marsh when searching for shrimp and crabs. The water is typically so shallow, that fish backs and tails are often visible above the water. It is great fun to locate, stalk and cast a fly to these fish.

You’ll notice that I did not include catch in the previous sentence. Many things have to go absolutely right to actually catch a fish. While it can be challenging and frustrating, it is also very rewarding.

On pretty much every trip this week we would see at least 15 to 20 reds in the shallow marsh. Some would spook as I quietly poled the skiff towards them. Others would get scared when the fly gently hit the water three feet away. One or two would track the fly, but refuse to eat. Then every so often (but not as often as I would like), the stars and moon would align and a fish would cooperate. It is really cool to see the redfish slowly approach the fly and then dart forward and eat it. Once hooked, given the ultra shallow water, the fish have no place to go but away (as fast as they can). The fight is always challenging as these reds are adept at breaking you off on the Spartina grass.

Out of the 20 or so fish that I might see, I feel lucky to catch one or two. Even with the low conversion rate, this is still my favorite way to fish. Next time the moon brings us favorable tides, give this fishery a try. I feel sure you will enjoy it as much as I do.

Saltwater Fishing Report around Charleston

Spottail Bass: Very good. Haddrell’s Point reports that redfish are scattered across all of the Lowcountry estuaries, and anglers continue to have best luck fishing under docks with deep holes and plenty of shade. These fish are being caught on live or cut bait, Gulp, or Rattle Traps.

Trout: Very good. Early and late in the day topwater action is hot for spotted sea trout. Use topwater lures like Zara Spooks and "walk the dog" around oyster shells and feeder creeks on moving tides.

Flounder: Good. Flounder fishing continues to improve over the last few weeks, and best results are coming fishing around the edges of rock piles and creek mouths. Fish live finger mullet or mud minnows on a Carolina rig.

Sheepshead: Very good. Fish fiddler crabs, clam pieces, or cut shrimp.

Tarpon: Good. Fish large live mullet or menhaden in 6 to 15 foot deep slews between the sandbars on the outside of most any Charleston area inlet.

Spanish mackerel: Good. Nice catches of Spanish mackerel continue to be made in the Harbor. Fish Gotcha plugs or spoons.

Folly Beach Pier: A mixed bag continues to be caught at the pier, including whiting, bluefish, trout, Spanish mackerel, red drum, and sheepshead.

Freshwater report at Lake Moultrie

Largemouth Bass: Fair. Try deep Carolina or Texas rigging. Catfish: Very good. Catfish have moved deep but continue to bite well, particularly at night. Use cut bait - shad, herring, or mullet. Crappie: Fair. Look for structure in 20 to 25 feet of water and fish minnows vertically. Fishing should improve in the next few weeks. Bream: Fair. Few reports of bream being caught in the lower lake are available.

With the Olympics in full swing in Beijing, there was much chatter at the PGA about golf eventually becoming a part of the Summer Games. The PGA Tour is lobbying hard for it, as is Augusta National Golf Club and its chairman, Billy Payne, who ran the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

File/detar Melissa Roberts and her teammates on the Bishop England swim team practice at Daniel Island’s Pierce Park Pool. The team has its first meet on Saturday at Parkshore Pool in West Ashley and will have two home meets at Pierce Park Pool on Tue. Sept. 16 and Thur. Sept. 18.

BE football has double duty this weekend. On Friday night they kick off their season in game six of the Sertoma Classic against Wando. On Saturday, the team travels to Columbia to take on private Christian school Ben Lippen.

The swim team dives into the season this Saturday morning at Parkshore Pool in West Ashley against Academic Magnet and Berkeley High School.

‘Sing for your supper’ summer series

Spring Arbor of Daniel Island invites local island residents and the surrounding Charleston area to be our guests at our "Sing For Your Supper" summer series. This series includes a lineup of local musical talent performing every weekend in August. Upcoming performers will be the award-winning Viva Ladies Quartet will sing on Saturday, Aug. 23 and to close the series, a group of retired Air Force personnel called "The Chapeleers" will perform on Saturday, Aug. 30at 5:30 p.m. All performances are free and will take place in the Spring Arbor dining room. Light refreshments will be served in the foyer.

Picnic at the Porch

On Sunday, Aug. 24, from 5 p.m. until dark, Holy Cross will host a church family picnic! Holy Cross will provide the main course for dinner and ask participants to bring something to share. As we eat, we will have the opportunity to listen to some great bluegrass music. We will eat together on the grounds, so bring your blankets. Daniel Island Exploration with the South Carolina Aquarium

Join educators from the South Carolina Aquarium on Friday, Sept. 5 to explore the waters and woods of Daniel Island. The event begins by sampling in the water and looking at some of the small animals that inhabit the Cooper River and frequent the marsh. As the sun sets, you will take a look at the changes that occur in our environment as the day moves toward night. You will venture down the paths along the water and look for nighttime animals and listen for calls, buzzes and other things that go bump in the night.

Reservations are required and the cost is $5 per person for Aquarium members and $10 per person for non-Aquarium members. Special $10 discount on the new Family Plus membership for Daniel Island residents. To purchase a membership or to make a reservation, call 843-577-FISH (3474).

Daniel Island Wide Fall Red Balloon Yard Sale

It’s the garage sale you’ve all been waiting for! So gather all those goodies as bargain hunters get ready to descend on Daniel Island for the Fall Red Balloon Yard Sale! The yard sale will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6 from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. at homes throughout Daniel Island. The sale provides an opportunity for shoppers to wander the neighborhoods of Daniel Island in search of unique finds and special deals. Look for the homes with the "Red Balloons" on their porches or mailboxes as this signifies that they are part of the yard sale. Each participating homeowner will be responsible for putting red balloons on their mailbox or porch rail to indicate they are having a sale. The event will be held rain or shine.

This year we will be partnering again with The Junior League of Charleston, Inc. The Charleston League has raised and awarded millions of dollars to meet local needs in areas ranging from education to child abuse to feeding the homeless. Yard sale participants (and those not participating but having goods they would like to donate) may donate unsold items or unwanted gently used clothing, furniture, appliances, computer equipment, electronics, books, children’s toys, baby items and holiday decorations and other gently used wares. BBQ FOR BUCKS AIMS TO HELP CHARLESTON RESIDENT

A one-time benefit featuring musical performances from Triple Lindy, full dine-in/take-out barbecue dinner and a silent auction will be held on Sunday, Sept. 7 from 3-8 p.m. at Morgan Creek Grill near Wild Dunes resort on Isle of Palms. Funds raised from the benefit will support Nancy Lloyd, 37, of Isle of Palms who was the victim of a tragic car accident in Charleston on Memorial Day that left Lloyd with severe head, neck and bone injuries. The driver of the colliding vehicle died on impact.

BBQ for Bucks tickets are $15 and can be purchased through Marlene Hager at 224-7579, Pat Wise at 343-9955 or at the door the night of the event. BBQ for Bucks, hosted by close friends of Lloyd, will raise funds to support Lloyd’s escalating hospital and physical therapy bills, as well as rent and basic living expenses until she is able to work again.

Mt. Pleasant Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) to host Senator Verdin

State Sen. Danny Verdin, chairman of the Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee, will be in Mt. Pleasant on Thursday, Aug. 21. He will address the monthly meeting of Moultrie Camp #27, SCV. Senator Verdin, who represents District 9, which includes portions of Greenville and Laurens Counties, is unopposed this November in seeking his third term. He has served as chairman of the Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee since April 2007. He is also a former commander of the South Carolina Division of the SCV. The SCV, formed in 1896, is a historical honor society and service organization, dedicated to education and preservation. It has over 30,000 members in its local chapters (camps) worldwide and is the largest organization of its kind. Membership is open to males of 12 years of age and older who are descendants of those that rendered honorable service in the Confederate armed forces. Scottish Country Dance Ball

Charleston Scottish Country Dancers Ball will be held Saturday, Sept. 20 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Felix Davis Community Center, 4800 Park Circle. The fee is $5. There will be highland dancing by Laura Tellefsen.

A few weeks ago, I stood before South Carolina’s school principals, as I do each year, to address the state of our schools and review progress toward the five education priorities I pledged to push for as State Superintendent of Education.

There’s a great deal to celebrate. We have made tremendous strides toward the goal of expanding the choices available to parents and students in public schools. South Carolina is now a national leader in single-gender education, with programs available in nearly 250 schools. Charter schools, magnet programs, Montessori schools, alternative schools, and many other choice options are expanding in districts across the state.

Goodwill Industries needs clothing donations

Dear Editor,

Goodwill Industries of Lower South Carolina is experiencing a donation crisis and is reaching out to the community for help. Donations of gently used clothing are vital to support the mission of Goodwill. As the economy continues to struggle, we have seen a dramatic decrease in donations of clothing. From now until the end of the year, Goodwill will be supporting outreach programs to the Homeless and disadvantaged and is asking for the community to rise up to the challenge.

DI residents sound off about I-526 noise

ELIZABETH BUSH Cars and trucks stream over the James B. Edwards Bridge in the morning fog onto the Daniel Island stretch of I-526. Some residents in Daniel Island Park feel the noise generated from traffic on the highway is becoming increasingly bothersome.

When Bob Jordan steps onto the front porch of his Daniel Island Park home in the early morning hours for some quiet reading and meditation time, he’s looking for a little peace and tranquility to start the day. But that’s not always what he gets.

"A lot of times traffic just blows me out of there, and I have to go back inside," said Jordan, referring to the noise generated from cars and trucks traveling along nearby I-526. "It’s a problem. Something that to me has gotten to the point where it just doesn’t stay in the background anymore…It’s gotten worse, and you just can’t push it to the back of your mind like we used to be able to do."

1-cent sales tax referendum will be on November ballot

A proposed 1-cent sales tax for Berkeley County road improvements could pave the way for the long-awaited widening of Clements Ferry Road.

The County Council voted Aug. 11 to put the tax increase referendum on the November election ballot. If approved, the seven-year increase will help Berkeley County better compete for federal and state highway funds.

Regional Palmetto State distribution centers can keep SPA contender in shipping game

PROVIDED Work began this summer to install 3.5 million feet or 662 miles of wick drains at the 280-acre SPA expansion site on the former navy base in North Charleston. The new terminal, expected to be online in 2013, will boost total port capacity by about 50 percent. This additional port capacity is crucial to handle the more than 20 million square feet of distribution space being developed in and around the Charleston region over the next few years.

Highballing container trucks driving to and from Mount Pleasant’s Wando Welch marine terminal are daily reminders of the State Ports Authority’s role in the local economy.

It is a role that SPA officials hope to expand in coming years.

As site preparation continues at the SPA’s proposed new terminal site at North Charleston’s former navy base, the SPA is casting its nets toward South Carolina’s Midlands and Upstate regions for new revenue opportunities.

Dear Editor:

Your report of the "fear" of Rep. Merrill, Mr. Bailey, and two others concerning an upcoming "horror show" from SPA seemed unfortunately biased toward the views of local politicians and the Daniel Island Company. My impression was that the reported DINA meeting included much community concern about the proposal to have residents spend $25 million or more (plus additional future maintenance) to buy land for golf courses, residential development, parks, and open space. But no concern in that direction was reported in an article limited only to quotes from supporters of the expenditures.
