VENTURESOUTH CHARLESTON REPORTS RECORD-BREAKING QUARTER

VentureSouth Charleston, an angel investment group in Charleston that invests in early stage companies across the Carolinas as part of VentureSouth, recently announced a record-breaking quarter of investments and capital returns.

During the second quarter of 2018, the group had two successful exits from its portfolio, returning to investors nearly seven times their investment in just under two years at an annual rate of return of over 150 percent, stated a press release.

In the same period, VentureSouth Charleston members participated in investments of over $4 million into 11 companies – a record-breaking level of activity. These investments included both new and existing portfolio companies. This brings the capital invested in 2018 to $5 million, which has already surpassed 2017’s total of $4.5 million.

New companies receiving investment for the first time included Threatswitch, a security and compliance software platform for heavily-regulated companies; Spiffy, an on-demand car care, technology, and services company; and Emergo Therapeutics, a biopharmaceutical start-up.

Existing portfolio companies also received additional funding, including Proterra, Greenville’s electric bus manufacturer; Cirtemo, a developer of optical filter technologies in Columbia; and CharlestonPharma, a biotech company in Charleston.

The group has doubled in membership over the last year, continued the press release.

VentureSouth Charleston Director Eric Thome commented, “Creating positive financial returns from early stage investments can be difficult. The last quarter has proven that the VentureSouth platform can help members generate attractive returns. Our wide membership, deal flow, professional full-time team, and active support of portfolio companies help members make, and realize, good investments. We look forward to continuing this cycle of success as we continue to grow rapidly in Charleston.”

VentureSouth was one of several investment firms to take part in “What’s the Big Idea?” – a “Pitch U” event presented by Dianne Shaver, creator and CEO of Entrepreneur Mind World, in partnership with The Daniel Island News. The company also reports it has a number of investments and investors on Daniel Island.
