BERKELEY CO. LAUNCHES TECH TRAINING PILOT PROGRAM

Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler recently announced a pilot program to connect Berkeley County citizens with the training needed for Volvo Cars manufacturing positions. Through a partnership with Trident Technical Col-lege, South Carolina Department of Commerce, Volvo Cars, Ready SC and Berkeley County, there will be two informational events for Berkeley County residents. A curriculum has been created to provide county residents with the necessary qualifications. These meetings will provide and explain the curriculum and pathway.

Volvo Cars’ South Carolina facility in Ridgeville will produce the all new S60 sedans at the end of 2018. Volvo Cars is slated to begin its process for mass hiring of production and maintenance team members in the fall of 2017, ultimately creating nearly 2,000 jobs over the next decade in Berkeley County. The following meetings will provide Berkeley County citizens with necessary information and resources.

These meetings are open to Berkeley County residents only and pre-registration is required. The information sessions are free and, upon completion of the program, Berkeley County Citizens will be qualified to apply for various other manufacturing positions in the area. This does not guarantee citizens a job at Volvo Cars.

There will be two opportunities to attend:

· Thursday, June 8, 5:00 p.m. at Timberland High School

· Saturday, June 10, 9:00 a.m. at Cane Bay Middle School

“This pilot program shows that Berkeley County leaders are keeping our promises and connecting Berkeley County citizens with jobs,” said Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler. “It’s an exciting time for the County, as Volvo Cars gets closer to opening its facility. We’re honored to have strong partnerships to create job opportunities for people here at home.”

GUESTS TOUR DANIEL’S CORNER SITE

The developers of Daniel’s Corner, a three story “Class A” mixed use building coming to 145 River Landing Drive, recently invited community members and local business leaders to tour the site that will house the new 18,000 square foot facility. Guests walked a floor plan that was mapped out on the foundation with blue tape at the May 17 event, and enjoyed a catered lunch provided by Daniel Island Dinners. The building’s first two floors will feature office space and on the third floor will be two upscale residential penthouse units. The second floor is almost fully leased, with one remaining space. And there are several prospective tenants for the first floor, according to Phillip Manchester, managing partner for S.L. Shaw & Associates LLC and co-owner of Daniel’s Corner. The building is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by April of 2018.
