PUBLIX EXPANSION PLANS DELAYED

In June of 2017, Publix announced plans to expand its Daniel Island location by nearly doubling its footprint from 27,000 square feet to 49,000 square feet. A completion date was set for late 2018. But those plans have been delayed and there is no current timeline for the expansion, noted Kimberly Reynolds, media and community relations manager for Publix Super Markets.

“Our desire is to expand this store,” said Reynolds. “We ultimately want what’s best for the store and our community, and so we are simply working through those plans and some of the nuances, and as a result we just don’t have a timeline set.”

The project last went before the City of Charleston Design Review Board in October of 2017. At that time, approval on the expansion was deferred so that the DRB could receive more accurate renderings. Among the issues cited with the plans at the time were not enough windows, an “unsuccessful” park-like design, the need for a restudy of the building in a three-dimensional manner to assess its view from 526, a more honest application from the façade standpoint in terms of hierarchy of design, and a restudy of plant material. After the meeting, City of Charleston Communications Coordinator Chloe Field told The Daniel Island News that the developers would need to make the recommended changes and come back once they were completed.

Publix did not provide information on whether or not the initial plans for the project have been scrapped entirely, or are simply being reworked. Original designs called for expanding each of the fresh food departments and grocery aisles, as well as a larger selection of products and services. The store was to remain open during construction.

“We continue to have an interest in expanding this store,” stated Reynolds. “As we previously shared, our goal is to provide our customers on Daniel Island an even better shopping experience with expanded services and products. This project is still a priority for us. While I previously shared with you a late 2018 planned completion, there is not currently an expansion timeline in place. We will continue to revisit this opportunity.”
