DI attorney buys, refurbishes second Mellow Mushroom

The Mellow Mushroom in North Charleston located at Tanger Outlets, 4855 Tanger Outlet Blvd., is under new ownership and was recently refurbished.

 

The owners of the existing Mellow Mushroom in Mount Pleasant, since its inception in December 2008, Daniel Island residents Walter and Katrina Harris and their new partner, Christopher Hatfield, recently purchased the franchise from the previous owners, All Four One, LLC.  

 

Walter Harris, who has a law practice on Daniel Island, noted he is especially proud to team up with Hatfield, the long term general manager of his Mount Pleasant store. He said, “Since Chris arrived the day after Hurricane Matthew in 2016, which at that time was a stressful time for everyone, Katrina and I knew from day one when he jumped right in that he was perfect for the job and would help take us to the next level very soon, which he did.”

 

When the sudden opportunity arose to expand to another Mellow Mushroom, Harris explained that it was an easy call for the team to make given the success of the Mount Pleasant store, the busy Tanger location (including Top Golf, among other developments being built across the street) and having a true restaurateur in Hatfield. 

 

“I am an attorney who loves business and Chris is a restaurateur who loves running a restaurant. It really has served us well so far with our current restaurant in how we use our combined skill sets to achieve the success we have had,” Harris said.

 

Upon purchase, the new owners immediately closed it for 11 days from Feb. 21 to March 5 for extensive renovations inside and outside, including adding all new restaurant equipment, furniture, painting, landscaping, and lighting. 

 

They also added a beautiful mural from renowned Atlanta artist, Thomas Turner. The mural took 100 hours to paint and covers the entire bar area. It features elements of the sky, clouds, a Mellow Mushroom wizard and a touch of the lowcountry, with a beautiful hand-painted egret connected to a mushroom and tree. 

 

The new owners said they are excited for the guests to experience these new additions and changes. And, in April, they expect to add new interior art lights and statues to the Mellow Mushroom ambiance. 

 

“We really want to duplicate our success in Mount Pleasant by bringing to this location our complete focus on the customer experience, producing high-quality food that people love and making sure we are always reinvesting into the building, the equipment and our employees for the years to come,” Harris said.

 

The Mellow Mushroom North Charleston at Tanger Outlets is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday to Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday-Sunday. It is a full-service, family friendly restaurant with a large bar with 40 beers on tap. Given its expansive size it can handle all manner of large parties, events and special occasions.

 

The location is less than a 15-minute drive from Daniel Island.
