DI's newest gallery shines light on local artists

Art creates a window into your happy place. When you hang art that evokes emotion, it fills the space with happiness. No one knows this better than Daniel Island’s talented and upbeat artist Laurie Meyer who has walls of windows at the new Meyer Vogl Gallery on 250 River Landing Drive.

“We love the windows — three glorious sides of pure light! We love the light!” Meyer said of the new space.

This location’s three walls of windows were a big reason the gallery came to be. Co-owners Laurie Meyer, Melissa Vogl, and Katie Geer said initially they were only thinking of temporary space because they had to close the second floor of their Meyer Vogl Gallery Meeting Street location downtown for three months and temporarily relocate 300 paintings. “We did not know what to do with all those paintings," the owners said. "We were going to pop up into whatever’s empty. We didn’t have a long-term idea for Daniel Island,” Until Pete Harper at Lee and Associations showed them this space.

“We decided to make small decisions about each next step. We’ll talk to the architect, then we’ll move to the next step.”

Each next step they took led them to the next. Then the more people they talked to shared their enthusiasm about the gallery.“People said, this is amazing, our community needs culture!”

The space is energetic and engaging and filled with curious visitors, collectors picking up their work and artists stopping by.

“I feel like this amazing, positive explosion from this tiny corner of the building!” Meyer shared.

Their intention is to drop the veil of intimidation some people feel when entering a gallery as well as inspiring plans to foster community involvement in the arts. Meyer noted, “In the future we would like to have small musical events, poetry readings, people with books, small dances, whatever the place could hold. We are looking at ways to bring all the arts through the building.”

The gallery is currently a curation of contemporary fine arts with a representative sample from around the Lowcountry, a nice cross-section from the U.S., and two international artists from Spain. “Right now, we have all the artists that we represent downtown. When we opened downtown, one of our beliefs was we would choose work that excite the three of us. We all have to agree. If we are going to represent someone, we have to feel it! We are all pretty upbeat, happy people so we found that our work really represents that emotion,” Meyer said.

It’s that energy that carried the Meeting Street gallery into a banner year and allowed the creation of Daniel Island’s new gallery.

“We had such a good 2021. People feel the realization that art is healing. What they look at affects their emotions and mood and outlook. That is why we have all bright, happy art,” Meyer said.

The Daniel Island gallery is now open for all to enjoy. Please look out for a community open house event in the near future that will be fashioned as an art walk. Additionally, the Meyer Vogl Gallery will hold smaller cultural events throughout the year.

“Come! We hope to see a lot of old friends and meet new ones!” Meyer added.
