There’s always a sweet deal at Sauer Grapes

You don’t need to travel across the bridge to find fine wine at fabulous prices. Intimate wine tastings, expert advice, gourmet food, and much more are available close to home at Marie Sauer’s Sauer Grapes Daniel Island Wine Shop.

Sauer opened the wine shop almost eight years ago on Island Park Drive and moved it to 125 River Landing Drive, next door to the popular Sermet’s Courtyard, several years ago.

“I always wanted to live on Daniel Island so I jumped at an opportunity when it came up. It’s been a perfect match to live here and run a business I love,” she said.

When the COVID-19 crisis hit in March, Sauer closed a large part of her popular offerings, but she quickly adjusted to meet the needs of customers.

“Wine tastings are a big part of my business, so having to shut those down for weeks was tough. We shifted to online tastings, which I enjoy, but I’m glad to be able to offer in-person tastings again while following safety guidelines. I cut back on hours when I was only offering pickup only, but now I’m basically back to normal,” she said.

Sauer implemented new measures, including social distancing, masks, and sanitation protocols, to help customers feel safe while shopping and sipping. For those who prefer not to venture out during the pandemic, Sauer offers Zoom presentations in the comfort of their home and curbside wine pickup.

Sauer has more than 30 years of experience in the wine business. Her expertise and love of wine is evident in everything she does.

“I beat all competitor prices. Also I love to do private tastings in the shop and at people’s homes. I love to talk about wine, help people choose wine, and teach everything I know about wine,” she said.

Lowcountry local Alan Burgreen appreciates Sauer’s vast wine knowledge and her pricing. “Marie provides valuable information when you are making a wine selection,” Burgreen said. “She can thoroughly explain how each region, varietal and wine maker vary to make each wine unique. Along with her extensive knowledge, she has hands down the best selection and pricing that I have ever seen.”

Daniel Island resident Aaron Pennell also appreciates Sauer’s selection skills.

“Marie has an amazing selection and is always willing to help you choose just the right bottle within any budget,” he said. “She has introduced me to so many great wines, expanding my knowledge and my palate.”

Since moving to Daniel Island, Debbie O’Brien said Sauer Grapes is her go-to wine store: “Whether stopping in for a glass of wine before dinner, to stock up the house inventory, a private tasting with visiting friends, a special occasion, or one of her many tastings, we have enjoyed them all.

“Marie has a knowledge of wine like no other. Having this local resource is amazing. Whenever we have visitors, Sauer Grapes is in one way or another involved, with either a visit to the shop or a bottle with dinner at home that she has recommended. Daniel Island is fortunate to have Sauer Grapes, no matter what your price point is when selecting wine.”
