Daniel Island Celebrates the Gullah Culture!
The Daniel Island Historical Society couldn’t have asked for a more splendid afternoon to celebrate the Gullah culture under the oaks at Daniel Island’s Children’s Park last Sunday, April 24. The weather was picture perfect for the 2nd Annual “Live Oak Lights: Illuminating Our Heritage” event. Attendees enjoyed a variety of family-friendly activities, including rag quilting and Gullah doll-making with Sharon Cooper-Murray, “History and Haikus” with island author Crystal Klimavicz, Gullah fashions presented by Cainhoy area Seamstress Janet Wright, rice art with Black Tie Music Academy, painting in the park, Gullah cuisine by Chef B.J. Dennis, soulful music by The Plantation Singers, and a foot-stomping performance by The Music Battery drumline.
