Laurie Steinke of Daniel Island poses at the Women’s March in DC with her niece, Mackenzie.
Daniel Islanders Laurie and Louis Steinke took part in the Women’s March. Said Laurie of the event, “The March was an amazing experience!…Our message was tolerance and inclusion. This was not an anti-Trump protest. It was a March of the People to declare our intention to protect the rights of all Americans, and the world at large.”
Among the attendees at the South Carolina Society Presidential Ball at the National Portrait Gallery / Smithsonian in Washington, were Berkeley County Councilman Tommy Newell, Paige Crone of the American Cancer Society, and Daniel Island residents Josh Whitley, also a Berkeley County Councilman, and Wendy Thrower. The historic setting also served as the site of Abraham Lincoln’s inaugural ball.
It was a weekend of pomp, tradition and freedom of expression - as millions gathered in our nation’s capital January 19 - 21 for a plethora of activities, including the inauguration of President Donald Trump as America’s 45th president on Friday and the Women’s March on Washington the next day. Taking part in the history-making moments along the way were several Daniel Island residents. Check out some of their photos below!
Although not a Daniel Island resident, Rep. Mark Sanford does represent the island as part of the First Congressional District. Sanford attended the inaugural festivities in Washington over the weekend and brought along over 190 folks as guests from the Lowcountry. He is pictured here on inauguration day at the U.S. Capitol with two of his colleagues in the U.S House of Representatives, Rep. Jeff Denham and Rep. Duncan Hunter, both from California.
Making their voices heard at the Women’s March on DC was a contingent of Daniel Island residents, including Rikke Fryman, Susanne Davis, Lee LoPriore, Christine Jennings, Heather McGrath, Siobhan Mendetzki, Jade Merrithew, Sarah Lyn Patterson, and Elizabeth Tranakos. “I myself was there marching not to protest Trump, but rather to stand up for rights of women which may be at risk in the new administration,” said LoPriore. “…I was overwhelmed with the feeling of inclusivity, understanding and empowerment that ran through all of the speakers and attendees.”
Daniel Island resident Dr. Keely Putnam (right) took part in the weekend’s presidential events, along with her sister, Kimberly Sitterle (left) of Mount Pleasant. “It was definitely a life experience and very memorable,” noted Putnam. “And something I will not forget for quite some time!”
These Daniel Island residents made the trip to Washington for the Women’s March with a group of 17 other local participants. Pictured are Heather McGrath, Rikke Fryman, Susanne Davis, and Jade Merrithew.
