Many Daniel Island amenity enhancements near completion

Construction crews continue to work diligently to build and update many of our amenities and community areas across Daniel Island. Improvements will continue throughout 2017, however several projects are close to completion.

THE CROW'S NEST AT EDGEFIELD PARK

The much-anticipated Crow’s Nest at Edgefield Park is almost finished, according to Jane Baker of the Daniel Island Property Owners Association. The second story poolside venue on the island’s south side is scheduled to be accessible to residents during the first week in February. The open-air, screened porch will feature expansive marsh views, a catering kitchen and bathrooms. The Crow’s Nest will have similar programming to the Pierce Park pool pavilion and will be available to Daniel Island residents for event rental.

Located near Smythe Park, the new Edgefield Park amenity center includes an Olympic-sized pool with three lap lanes, beach entry and water features. The pool will be open for the 2017 swim season.

BELLINGER ISLAND/BERESFORD CREEK BOAT LANDING

Improvements to the area around Bellinger Island, as well as the widening of the Beresford Creek boat landing, remain under construction. The project will be completed in March. Residents are asked to please refrain from entering the construction zone for safety reasons.

According to Baker, the Bellinger Island projects address a number of concerns.

“Bellinger Island has been eroding considerably over the last several years,” she said. “An engineering study recommended that we control the erosion with the installation of articulated block mats on the shoreline adjacent to Beresford Creek to stabilize the shore. The blocks will be continued on either side of the boat landing versus using timber bulkheads, which is the present condition. A safer boardwalk will be constructed leading to the floating dock.”

“We will also be adding a new bulkhead on one end of the footbridge that leads from the boat landing to Bellinger Island as well as adding gravel to improve the quality of the trail,” continued Baker. “Lastly, we will be reconstructing the viewing platform that is on the southern side of Bellinger Island.”

THE WATERFRONT PARK ADJACENT TO CHILDREN'S PARK

This project is in the master planning phase with the goal to break ground on construction sometime in 2017.

WANDO RIVER WALKWAY

The waterfront erosion project along the Wando River Trail is slated to begin in the coming weeks with a completion date of May 2017. This particular project is overseen by the City of Charleston and not affiliated with the DIPOA.
