2nd Annual Intergenerational Forum planned

Applications being accepted now for March 7 event

Calling all seniors! What are your thoughts on humanity, our nation, and the world today? Your valuable insights and perspectives are needed. The 2nd Annual Intergenerational Forum, featuring a panel of senior high school students and senior citizens, will be held on Tuesday, March 7, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Bishop England High School’s Performing Arts Center.

Five senior high school students will be selected from a pool of applicants to participate. High schools taking part in the application process include Bishop England, Porter-Gaud, Palmetto Scholars Academy, Academic Magnet, Hanahan, Oceanside Collegiate Academy, and Wando. Applicants from other schools are also welcome. Additionally, five senior citizens will be selected to join the panel from the community at large.

Application forms have been sent to each school, but can also be obtained at the following link: http://www.thedanielislandnews.com/news/2017-intergenerational-forum. Completed applications, along with a headshot/photo, should be emailed to igf29492@gmail.com or dropped off at The Daniel Island News office at 225 Seven Farms Drive, Suite 108. The deadline for submission is February 3, 2017.

Applicants will be asked to write a brief statement about themselves and provide answers to three questions that will be addressed at the event. This year’s questions are as follows:

• What can we do about the rising trend of incivility in our country?

• In this age of technology and digital communication, how is the way we engage with one another affecting our interactions? What impact is this having on relationships across generations?

• What should America do about the 11 million undocumented immigrants now living in our country?

According to Fred Danziger, Intergenerational Forum Chairman, applicants should have a natural curiosity about the world, have good interpersonal skills and be comfortable speaking on a panel and answering questions in a public forum. They should also be able to thoughtfully articulate an opinion on the subjects listed above, and do so in the context of their generation. This year’s event will feature a new and improved format, said Danziger.

“The most repeated comment from last year’s attendees following the IGF on a post event survey was that there wasn’t enough time for participants to get more involved on their issues,” he explained. “So, in response, we have narrowed down this year’s issues to just three. Last year, there were 12. This is going to allow for a more in-depth discussion and a more meaningful interaction between seniors citizens and high school seniors.”

The Daniel Island News will serve as the presenting sponsor of the event. Cash grants will be awarded at the conclusion of the program to the participating students who offer the most well-presented issues and proposed solutions.
