Aggravated assault with a firearm reported

Sex offense, larcenies, thefts, voyeurism among other reported crimes

The following cases were taken from City of Charleston Police reports filed with Team 5 on Daniel Island between Sep. 16, 2017 and Nov. 8, 2017.

AGGRAVATED ASSAULT WITH A FIREARM

Police were contacted after a man was attacked by multiple offenders on Oct. 26 at a residence on River Landing Drive. According to the report, the victim was returning to his apartment and saw a man standing on the sidewalk. As he walked to his door, the man rushed up behind the victim and struck him on the head with a pistol. The victim told police that others then proceeded to jump in and beat him up, after which they all fled the scene. This case is still under investigation.

DOMESTIC DISPUTES/ASSAULTS

Police were called to a store on Clements Ferry Road on Sep. 23 in reference to a domestic dispute between a boyfriend and girlfriend. The girlfriend alleged that her boyfriend grabbed her, shook and pushed her. According to the report, the boyfriend had also slammed the door and broke the windows. The boyfriend told police that they had been drinking and that his girlfriend had hit him. There were no arrests or charges.

A domestic assault that occurred at a residence on River Landing Drive was reported to police after the victim contacted a counselor and doctor at the Medical University of South Carolina. The victim told the professionals at MUSC that her husband had choked her and threatened to kill her, and that she was experiencing pain and difficulty swallowing. The counselor contacted police.

In a separate case, a woman contacted police after her husband reportedly grabbed her and left a bruise on Sep. 24. A divorce is pending. No arrests were made.

SIMPLE ASSAULT

Team 5 responded to a residence in Barfield Park on Sep. 28, where a mother and daughter were having a physical dispute. The police found the mother restraining the daughter, after which the daughter threatened to drink a glass of bleach, according to the report. She was transported to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

SEX OFFENSE

A young woman reported to Team 5 on Oct. 1 that during July of 2016, she attended a party in Daniel Island Park where there was underage drinking. The victim told police that she ended up in a bedroom with a female friend and two young males. The friend and one of the males started to become intimate, so the victim went to another room. The victim alleged that the other male followed her and forced her to have sexual relations with him. The offender currently attends an out-of-state university. The case is still under investigation.

PEEPING TOM

A student was reported and charged after allegedly filming another student in the restroom of Daniel Island School on Sep. 19, according to police. Although nothing gratuitous was filmed, the video was reportedly taken in a private setting and shared with other classmates. The school resource officer charged the student as a juvenile with voyeurism and released them to their parents. They were also referred to family court. Counseling was recommended for the victim.

FAMILY OFFENSE - NONVIOLENT

Team 5 was dispatched to a residence on Fairbanks Oak Allee in reference to reports of elderly abuse. The complainant told police that her uncle, the alleged victim, was being abused by his wife. Upon further investigation, it was determined that his wife was unable to care for the victim. Relocation of the victim to other family members who can take care of him has been arranged.

DEATH INVESTIGATIONS

Team 5 responded to a residence on Seven Farms Drive on Sep. 18 after friends of the victim reported not hearing from him in days. Upon entry, the property supervisor and police found the victim deceased. It was ruled a natural death.

A man was found deceased of natural causes in an apartment on Robert Daniel Drive on Oct. 23. According to the report, a woman contacted management at the apartment complex after knocking on the door of her estranged husband’s apartment, whom she kept in daily contact with, and getting no response. The woman had not heard from the man for two days. Management entered and found the victim deceased.

MOTOR VEHICLE THEFTS

Two unlocked vehicles were stolen from an apartment complex on Daniel Island between Sep. 16 and 17. They were later recovered by police in North Charleston and returned to the owners.

A pickup truck was stolen from a residence on Daniel Island between Nov. 1 and 2. According to the report, the keys were left inside and were visible. The vehicle has not been recovered.

BICYCLE THEFTS

A bicycle was stolen off the bike rack at Daniel Island School on Sep. 23. It was left for several days unsecured. The bike has not been recovered.

A bicycle that was locked in the garage of an apartment complex on Seven Farms Drive was reported stolen on Nov. 2. According to the report, the victim thinks the bicycle was not locked to a fixed object. The bicycle has not been recovered.

FOUND PROPERTY

A mini motorbike was turned into police on Sep. 24. According the Team 5 Commander Lt. James Byrne, in order to retrieve the motorbike, the owner must describe the bike and show some kind of proof of ownership.

INTIMIDATION

Team 5 was contacted by a woman at a residence in Barfield Park on Sep. 24 after her ex-boyfriend reportedly threatened to release compromising videos and photos of her. The victim advised that after they began dating, he threatened to harm her and others, which led to their break-up, after which his behavior worsened. No charges have been made.

Police responded to a residence in Daniel Island Park on Oct. 11 in reference to threats made over the telephone. The victim told police that an unknown person sent a text threatening to harm the victim’s home unless he called him. The suspect also sent a photo of himself holding a shotgun. This case is still under investigation.

A woman reported to police that her ex-boyfriend, whom she dated on and off for several months, was stalking her residence in Daniel Island Park, leaving her notes and repeatedly knocking on the door. No physical threats were made but the victim reported that she ended the relationship.

ANIMAL SERVICES RESPONSE

Animal Services responded to Daniel Island Park after a resident alleged that while walking their dog, a large off-leash dog lunged and grabbed their dog. A citation was issued to the owner of the off-leash dog for non-restraint.

THEFTS FROM BUILDINGS

Police were alerted after a debit card was stolen from a desk in a business on Fairchild Street between Sep. 26 and 28. The debit card had been used to make purchases and an arrest was made.

A handgun was stolen from a Robert Daniel Drive apartment complex between Sep. 27 and Oct. 7. The owner reported the gun stolen on Oct. 11 after he returned from out of town and found it missing. There were no signs of forced entry.

THEFTS FROM MOTOR VEHICLES

An unlocked vehicle in Cochran Park was entered on Sep. 29 by an unknown suspect and a few dollars were reported stolen.

A vehicle at a Robert Daniel Drive Apartment Complex was broken into on Oct. 4. The victim contacted police after they found the vehicle had been entered and an assortment of items stolen, including a laptop and other electronics.

Parts were reported stolen on Oct. 10 after the owner of the vehicle recovered his truck from a local towing company and found that it was completely stripped. According to the report, the truck had stalled and the owner left it to be towed. Four mud tires were stolen and the entire inside of the vehicle was stripped. This case is still under investigation.

Two vehicles were reported broken into at Tallison Row Apartments between Nov. 1 and 2. A flashlight and pair of sunglasses were reported stolen from a soft-top jeep that had the window partially down and two pairs of sunglasses were taken from another vehicle that had no signs of forced entry. This case is still under investigation.

RECOVERED STOLEN VEHICLE

A vehicle that was stolen from Mount Pleasant on Sep. 16 was found at Daniel Landing Condominiums on Oct. 9. The vehicle was returned to the owner.

LARCENY

Over $700 worth of liquor was reported stolen from a special event tent at Daniel Island Club on Oct. 7. This case is still under investigation.

LARCENIES BY FALSE PRETENSES

Team 5 was alerted on Oct. 4 after a Daniel Island resident lost $2000 to a scam. The victim told police that a man contacted him stating he was his grandson and that he was in jail and needed $2000 to post bail. The man told the victim to not contact his parents and asked for the payments in gift cards.

A local woman contacted police after she lost $40,000 after falling victim to a con. The victim alleged that after meeting a man on a dating site and speaking to him over the computer for several months, he asked her for $40,000 for a contract from the federal government. Although they had never met in person, the victim told police that she wired the money, after which she felt uneasy. Upon further research, the victim found that the suspect’s information did not match up and that it was a con. This case is still under investigation.

HARASSMENT

Owners of a Daniel Island business contacted police after a former employee, who was terminated on Oct. 2, repeatedly tried calling to get his job back. The victims alleged that the harassment was so severe that they had to close the business. The harassment has since ceased and the victims declined prosecution.

Team 5 was contacted by a Daniel Island resident on Oct. 17 who alleged that her ex-fiance and his father were harassing her over the telephone. The victim told police that they were having a dispute over money and it was reported as harassment.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT

An arrest was made at a concert at Volvo Car Stadium on Oct. 21 after a heavily intoxicated female refused to leave upon officer request. According to the report, the female repeatedly swore and was arguing with the officers. The officers asked her to leave and she declined. An officer then summoned a taxi but the woman declined. The officers then ordered her to leave and she again declined. She was arrested, charged with disorderly conduct and transported to the Berkeley County Jail.

DRUG VIOLATION

An officer responded to Children’s Park on Oct. 22 after there were reports of parties engaging in sexual relations in a vehicle. According to the report, the officer found the vehicle, saw that the windows were fogged up and asked for the windows to be rolled down. The officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana and asked where it was, after which one of the people in the car retrieved it. A citation was issued for possession of marijuana.

SHOPLIFTING

Beer was stolen from a gas station on Daniel Island on Nov. 6. This is still under investigation.
