All in good fun: Trout, Redfish, and fishing with friends

Tropical storm Bonnie made for a wet and windy Memorial Day Weekend. However, Friday was sunny and warm. So I called my friend Donna Crocker and asked her to go fishing.

We met at the boat landing as the tide began to fall. Our plan was to target Trout as the tide fell and switch to Redfish at the bottom of the tide. Unfortunately, the Trout had other ideas. We caught a few but the action was a bit slow.

Rather than continuing to pursue Trout (in shallow water), we re-located to a series of docks with lots of rocks and oyster around them. It took a bit of looking but we eventually found a school of over-slot Redfish in the area.

I hooked up first using a new Z-Man Swimmin Trout Trick (Fried Chicken). The fish put up a strong fight making me think it was a big fish but when it came to the skiff it was only 27 inches. Donna immediately began giving me a hard time.

The ribbing continued until Donna hooked a fish (using a mud minnow on a jig). Then it was my turn to dish out some smack (as the Redfish was putting a great fight). For several minutes it was unclear who would win. Eventually Donna prevailed but her fish was a bit smaller than mine. Of course, the smack talking intensified.

We picked at the Redfish for the rest of day. Lucky for me, Donna could not best the 27 inch mark. So I won our friendly competition. Winning is good. Spending time fishing with your friends is better.
