Appreciate the gift of Lowcountry fishing

When you do anything a lot, sometimes you can get into a bit of a rut. For the past few weeks, I was feeling that way about fishing. So, I decided to do something different - fishing for rainbow trout in the Clinch River. Over the years, I have developed a friendship with Mike Bone, one of the top fly fishing guides in Tennessee. Surprisingly, Mike was available to fish on Saturday. My son, Elliott, and I jumped on the opportunity.

As the weekend approached, the weather took a turn for the worse. On Thursday night, a winter storm warning was posted for the upstate of South Carolina through North Carolina and Tennessee. Undeterred, Elliott and I jumped into my Jeep and headed to the mountains. Just past Columbia, it started to snow. Around Spartanburg, the landscape began to turn white. Just outside of Asheville, I started to question my judgement. Thankfully, the road through the mountains remained passable and we made it safely to the Clinch River.

While the snow had stopped, it was still bitterly cold. Even with our high-tech winter weather gear, the cold made for tough fly fishing. Ice formed in the guides of our fly rods and all feeling quickly left our hands. After about 90 minutes, fishing in Charleston did not seem like a rut after all! Eventually, the sun cleared the mountains and the wind became calm. The last few hours of the trip were actually pretty comfortable. Elliott and I completed Clinch River “trifectas” by releasing a rainbow, brown and brook trout. It was a cold but very fun trip.

Now that I am back in the Lowcountry, reports of a strong trout bite and large schools of redfish on the flats have me anxious to fish. After my cold experience in Tennessee, the weather here seems balmy!
