Award-winning Ittiwan Oak receives new plaque
It’s official! A new plaque commemorating the Ittiwan Oak’s award as the South Carolina 2015 Heritage Tree was unveiled on December 14 at the base of the statuesque tree in Daniel Island’s Great Oak, located near the Ralston Creek Boat Landing. The award was given by Trees SC and was sponsored by Bartlett Trees. The Ittiwan Oak was dedicated earlier this year by DIHS in honor of the area’s Native American heritage. Pictured left to right at the newly installed Heritage Award plaque are Bob Longe and Todd Nedorostek of Bartlett Trees; Chief Herman Davis of the Etiwan Tribe of the Wassamasaw Indian Nation (ETWIN); Daniel Island Historical Society President Brenda Thorn; ETWIN member Orrell Simmons; Jane Baker, Vice President of Community Services for the Daniel Island Property Owners Association; and Lois Edwards and Karen Hauck of Trees SC.
