Berkeley Co. Supervisor delivers 'State of the County' address

Berkeley County is open for business – and Berkeley County means business.

It is a statement frequently touted by Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler when discussing the mission behind his work as the county’s top administrator. In fact, the phrase was a central theme in his recent “State of the County” Address, which he delivered in a recorded video from his desk at the Berkeley County Administration Building in Moncks Corner on February 1.

“We have announced nearly 1.5 billion dollars in economic development projects and nearly 5,000 new jobs in the past two years,” stated Peagler in his message. “To say Berkeley County is open for business would be an understatement. These announcements have a great impact on our county, including what I believe is the most important impact – new opportunities for Berkeley residents to not only live here, but also to work here.”

No longer does the next generation need to go to big cities, such as Atlanta, Charlotte and New York to find “dream jobs,” Peagler continued.

“Their dream jobs in technology, life sciences, and manufacturing are now here,” he said. “Across every part of Berkeley County – from Daniel Island to Moncks Corner, Hanahan to St. Stephen, Goose Creek to Ridgeville, and everywhere in between.”

According to Peagler, recent economic development projects will bring “new and significant revenue” to the county and “ease the pressure to raise taxes.” He also pointed out that Berkeley County is experiencing its lowest unemployment rate since April 2001, as reported in recent data released from the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce.

Peagler also cited a growing list of new infrastructure improvement projects, such as the new Nexton Parkway interchange on I-26 and the expansion of Clements Ferry Road – both of which are in planning, engineering, and pre-construction phases. He also drew attention to the planned intersection improvement project for Daniel Island at Daniel Island Drive and Seven Farms Drive.

“As this new year moves forward, we will continue to mean business as it relates to improving public safety in Berkeley County,” Peagler said. “Particularly with the realized and expected future population growth.”

Peagler also spoke during his remarks about efforts over the last two years to put a “strong focus” on providing additional resources and personnel funding for the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

“While we hope to continue that trend again this year, we know that we will need to invest more this year in our 911 Communications and EMS services. Making these investments...will not only ensure much needed improvements today, but it will also help build the proper support needed for future growth.”

Peagler promised to continue to work hard to be responsible with the county’s “tremendous resources” while managing growth.

“We are very proud of the incredible successes we share,” he said, during his address. “But we certainly will not rest on our laurels. We will continue to bring new opportunities, investments and jobs to our area.”
