Berkeley County Schools are 'Common Sense Certified'

The Berkeley County School District has been designated as a “Common Sense Media Certified District for Digital Citizenship” for the 2016-2017 academic year. A total of 26 schools throughout the district achieved this impressive certification, including Daniel Island School, Cainhoy Elementary, and Philip Simmons Elementary and Middle Schools.

To be a named as a Common Sense Certified District, at least 50 percent of its schools must meet the certified school criteria and it must have a specific plan to reach 100 percent in the next two years.

“We are thrilled that so many of our schools are now Common Sense Media certified for Digital Citizenship and have exceeded our goal of 50 percent,” said Director of Instructional Technology Priscila Calcutt. “We are providing our students with unlimited opportunities to maximize as well as personalize their learning by preparing them to be safe and responsible when online.”

Common Sense is a national not-for-profit organization that provides free resources to educators and advice to parents so that children can benefit from the power of technology for learning and life. The program provides teachers and schools with free research-based classroom tools to help students properly use technology. The K–12 Digital Citizenship Curriculum and interactive games teach students how to make safe, smart, and ethical decisions in the digital world.
