Brook Trout are the only native fresh water Trout species in South Carolina

According to naturalists, Brook Trout are the only native fresh water Trout species in South Carolina. They inhabit remote small mountain streams and are said to be a challenge to catch (with a dry fly). Brook Trout are also one of the few South Carolina fish that Elliott (my son) and I have yet to catch. So this week, we travelled to Bryson City, North Carolina in the hope of checking Brook Trout off of our list.

First, let me emphasize Brook Trout inhabit “remote” small mountain streams. Thus, our adventure began with a long and arduous (uphill) hike. Initially, the hike was OK as there was a path (of sorts). However, about an hour in, it was complete wilderness. Did I mention uphill?

Upon our arrival, the stream was picturesque. Well worth the ordeal to get there. Standing stream side (catching our breath), we could see Brook Trout gently sipping insects off the surface of the flowing water. A few minutes after entering the stream, both Elliott and I had checked Brook Trout off of our list.

The hike out was much easier. Otherwise, I would probably still be on the mountain!

There are easier locations in South Carolina to catch Brook Trout. However, going the hard route makes for more vivid memories.
