Community members celebrate Community Garden with ribbon cutting ceremony

On Friday, May 20, community members gathered at the Daniel Island School to celebrate the Community/School Garden ribbon cutting ceremony. After years of persistence, Jacqueline Gowe’s vision of a community garden on Daniel Island has come to fruition and has exceeded her original goal.

Located at the Daniel Island School, the garden has become a valuable learning tool for the children that attend the school. With over a hundred people in attendance, including the DIS strings/band led by Mr. Spitler, the ceremony included remarks from Gowe, longtime volunteer Cynthia Rumph, and Jane Baker with the Daniel Island Property Owners Association. Reflections of the long journey of construction of the new garden, the abundance of volunteer hours given, and also exciting plans for the future of the garden were presented.

“We envision the Daniel Island School and Community Garden as a place to explore not just the science of nature, but also the arts in nature: jazz concerts, coffee shop poetry readings, open air art workshops...The possibilities are endless,” says Gowe.
