Construction process begins on Farr St. active senior community
Crews began clearing trees near the planned Farr Street extension last month, officially kickstarting the construction process for “Overture Daniel Island,” a 55 and up active adult rental community. The new facility will be located behind the Bishop England baseball fields, in between the existing Daniel Island Village apartments and Grand Council Street.
The complex, a Greystar project, will offer an independent living experience, featuring resort-lifestyle inspired amenities, such as a club room, billiards room, movie theatre, fitness center, yoga studio, hair and nail salon and heated swimming pool. Additionally, Overture will offer educational and entertainment activities, maintenance-free living and modern interiors at a less expensive rate compared to traditional senior living, explained Director of Development for Greystar Robert Morgan.

Residents will have a choice between one and two bedroom apartment homes, all with large floor plans and designer finishes, continued Morgan. Each apartment includes a full size washer and dryer, walk-in closets, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and a private balcony. Golf-cart parking and private garages will also be available.

In addition to developing the new community, Greystar will also be extending Farr Street near the current Daniel Island Village apartments to meet Grand Council Street. Construction for the completion of both Overture and the Farr Street extension is slated for Fall 2019.
The projects have not been without controversy. Some residents along nearby Blakeway Street, as well as from other areas of the island, expressed concern when plans were first announced by developers in 2016. At the time, residents cited a lack of communication and transparency about the project, potential negative traffic and environmental impacts, and worries about the overall density of the complex. Through the process, a group of residents met with the developers to offer input on the designs and ultimately plans were altered to reflect their feedback. The changes Greystar made included reorienting and relocating the structure, adjusting the building’s massing, and realigning the Farr Street connection. In addition, landscaped buffers were added to the plans.
