What’s happening at the Daniel Island Library?

CHILDREN’S STORYTIME
Mondays at 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., starting January 9. Come dance to your favorite music and listen to exciting stories.

NEW! NATIONAL PUZZLE MONTH
During the month of January, library staffers will have a large jigsaw puzzle ready to be pieced together by one and all. Stop by as often as you like and be part of the fun.

NEW! “WHAT IN THE WORLD?”
Thursdays from 10:15 - 11:15 a.m., January 12 – February 23. Dr. Lester Pittman will lead a weekly discussion on world history and current events based on the book and video series, Civilization: The West and the Rest by historian Niall Ferguson. Discussions will compare the modern history of Europe, China, the Middle East, Japan, Africa, the United States, and Latin America as well as the roots of modernization and the impact of globalization. Are western civilization and the United States exceptional or can other regions and countries successfully modernize as well? How will globalization and the rise of the rest of the world affect Americans?


NEW! APP DEVELOPMENT FOR KIDS 8-18
Every Tuesday from 3:45 - 4:45 p.m., January 17 – February 21. Susie Starkman, a.k.a The Code Lady, will lead a six-week workshop for tweens and teens who want to build up some cool coding skills. Create real games you can play with your friends! This program, made possible by the Lucy Boyle Memorial Fund, is currently full. NEW! FRIDAY FUN
To be held from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. on January 20. The theme for this session will be paper jewelry. Once a month we will craft something recycling old books. Please register due to limited space.

NEW! MEDITATIVE YOGA SERIES
Kick-off lecture from 5 to 6 p.m. on Monday, January 23. Class will be held Mondays, January 30 – February 13, 5 to 6 p.m. Join Muni Natarajan to learn how to relax the body, calm thought and emotion, and reveal the inner potential we all have to lead more peaceful, useful and blissful lives regardless of external circumstances. The lecture will center upon clarifying time-tested meditation techniques designed to achieve practical benefits and will be followed by three consecutive Monday evenings focusing on putting these techniques into practice.

NEW! COOKBOOK CLUB
Every third Thursday. January 26 from 2 – 3 p.m. Are you a cookbook lover? Do you have a special meal that your family loves? Discover delicious family friendly meals from around the world such as Greece, Japan, Lebanon, Peru, and Poland. Each recipe should be easy to prepare, child-friendly and consist of ingredients found in the grocery store.

NEW! PRUNING BASICS
Monday, January 30, 1 – 2 p.m. Spring is coming soon and it is already time to start pruning the bushes and trees. Master Gardener Kerry Goldmeyer with show us the correct way to prune your way to a beautiful yard.

NEW! INCREASE YOUR INVESTING IQ
Tuesday, January 31, 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Building your investor IQ starts with understanding the basics. Whether you are new to investing or need a refresher, our Foundations of Investing presentation will help you learn about the importance of developing a strategy, the impact of asset allocation and the influence of inflation.

DI LIBRARY BOOK CLUB
Every third Tuesday, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. January 17 - Circling the Sun by Paula McLain. February 21 - The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls.

RECORDER CLASS
Tuesdays, 2 – 3 p.m. For beginning or “rusty” adults and teens who want to learn to play in a group setting. Prior recorder or other musical experience not required.

PAWS FOR READING
Saturdays, 12 - 1:30 p.m. This program is designed to help children who are struggling with their reading skills. It encourages children to read by providing a non-judgmental listener and furry friend to read to. Session is 20 minutes, by appointment only.

DI NEEDLEWORKERS
Alternate Tuesdays, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. January 10 and 24.

ZEN COLORING
Thursdays, 1 – 3 p.m. Color away your problems and feel the positive energy flow. All supplies provided.

WRITERS’ GROUP
Every first Tuesday, 6:30 – 8 p.m.
