TEN YEARS AGO - MARINA PLANS REVEALED

In the April 12, 2007 edition we featured how the parks and streets on Daniel Island got their names. We reported that many names are from past owners, relatives, business associates and occupations of Daniel Island’s inhabitants. We also reported that in 1995 the Daniel Island Company commissioned a local marketing and public relations firm to develop a naming convention for the island that has been faithfully used to name the parks and over 120 streets in the community.

In top news, nearly 40 residents packed Brewer’s Bistro (now Sermet’s Courtyard) for a presentation about The Daniel Island Company’s proposed Wando River marina project. Plans at the time called for two 30-foot docks for 320 boats, along with a 200-slip dry storage building and a hurricane-proof breakwater that could accommodate even larger mega-yachts. We also reported that a Town Square, to be located between Island Park Drive and I-526, was in the planning stages - the proposed $200 million, 410,000-square-foot retail and residential complex could open in late 2009 or early 2010. Neither of those projects happened as planned.

FIVE YEARS AGO - DANIEL ISLANDERS PERFORM ON STAGE AND IN FILM

In the April 12, 2012 edition of the paper we featured “Daniel Islanders perform on stage and in film.” At the time, the fun-filled family musical “Annie” arrived in the Lowcountry, and two of the show’s stars hailed from Daniel Island – 10 year-old Taylor Jenkins played one of the orphans, six year-old Kate, and island pooch Ziggy, the labradoodle of island resident Gina Gregory, played Annie’s lovable companion, Sandy. Another 10 year-old resident, Kennedy Coupe, made her movie debut in “The Dust That Floats Behind the Sky,” a short film directed by Charlotte Savage. Kennedy played Kylie, the younger version of one of the movie’s main characters.

In other news, Sensei Glenn Raus of Japan Karate Institute Daniel Island earned his 3rd degree black belt.

In sports, Serena Williams won the 2012 Family Circle Cup, beating Lucie Safarova in the final, 6-0, 6-1.
