STORAGE FACILITY EXPANSION

The DI Development Company (DIDC) is expanding the CubeSmart storage facility site at the end of Seven Farms Drive, adjacent to the Talison Row apartment community. The facility, previously managed by Stockade Storage, is being enlarged to accommodate the increased demand for boat/RV parking and indoor storage, stated the DIDC. Crews are in the process of clearing land for the expansion.

“The exact number of boat/RV spaces is still under review, but it will roughly double the current capacity of 200 slots,” said Julie Dombrowski, DIDC communications director. “There will also be a separate entrance for boat access, and additional improvements have been made to the facility over the past nine months.”

The Daniel Island News reached out via email to CubeSmart’s Charleston office to learn more about the project, but were told only the corporate office could comment. By press time, the paper had not received responses to questions submitted.

According to Dombrowksi, once the boat/RV spaces are added, construction will begin on 10-15,000 additional square feet of indoor storage space.

“This will likely happen in the fall,” added Dombrowski. “This project also includes an extension of Parkline Avenue and a 5-acre site that will accommodate small professional offices and a stormwater-management pond.”

CubeSmart took over the facility last October.

OAK LEAF STREET EXTENSION

Work is underway to extend Oak Leaf Street on the island’s south side, according to the DI Development Company (DIDC). The project is intended to provide paved access to the soccer and lacrosse fields located nearby. Currently, the fields are only accessible via a dirt road that extends past the Edgefield Park Pool and Crow’s Nest. According to Julie Dombrowski of the DIDC, the Daniel Island Town Association is handling the paving of the road, but per City of Charleston requirements it has to be widened. That is why some clearing is taking place, she said.

Daniel Island Natural Resource Association President Ken Scarlett questioned the clearing, specifically the removal of a large tree that he suspected was a habitat for wildlife in the area. When asked about the tree, Dombrowski noted that there was no variance required for its removal and stated that it was already partially down prior to it being cut.

“The City walked the site before any work was done and gave permission to remove the rest of the tree due to its condition,” she added.
