FIVE YEARS AGO – The Winner of the Family Circle Cup was announced

In the April 14, 2011 issue of the Daniel Island News, a new business called “Passport to Daniel Island” was launched on Daniel Island during the Family Circle Cup. According to island resident Steve Ferber, who crafted the initiative with fellow islander Colby Hollifield, the Passport Program was designed to introduce area residents to all that the island has to offer – at the time - 16 restaurants, plus dozens of shops and exceptional service providers.

In sports news, it was reported that Caroline Wozniacki won her first Family Circle Cup. Ironically she beat Elena Versina who was also the runner up in this year’s Volvo Car Open that ended this past Sunday with a new champion, Sloane Stephens.

In business news, American Benefit Services, an insurance and financial services marketing organization focused primarily on serving senior citizens, would be bringing 50 employees to the island. ABS was founded in New Jersey by John Stratton.

It was also reported that the fire at 899 Island Park Drive was ruled accidental. The cause was due to electrical issues.

 

TEN YEARS AGO - Tornado hits Family Circle Cup during tournament qualifying rounds

In the April 13, 2006 issue of the Daniel Island News, the front cover depicted tennis player, Justin Henin-Hardenne. At the time, the 23-year-old Belgian tennis star was a heavy favorite after winning the trophy three previous times at the Family Circle Cup. However, the outcome was not in her favor. The winner that year was Nadia Petrova.

In island news, Steve Livingston with the City of Charleston parks promised Daniel Islanders that more playground equipment would be added to the island’s parks, including a restroom at Etiwan Park. At the time, that park was bare. Other important parks were Freedom Park which is now located behind Daniel Island School, and also Governors Park.

The centerfold article featured the Bocce Bash on Daniel Island at the then Blackbaud stadium to benefit the Special Olympics. This event still takes place every year.

In business news, SunTrust Bank opened its doors on Daniel Island. SunTrust Banks, Inc., headquartered in Atlanta, is one of the nation’s largest banking organizations, serving a broad range of consumer, commercial, corporate and institutional clients.
