TEN YEARS AGO - THEN SUPERVISOR DAN DAVIS PROVIDED AN UPDATE ON HIS FIRST 100 DAYS

In the April 19, 2007 edition, our top news story featured the newly elected Berkeley County Supervisor at the time, Dan Davis, who explained that his first 100 days in office were a learning process and that he didn’t expect any tax increases due to county growth keeping pace with increasing costs and unfunded mandates. Davis touted the Google and Hillwood projects and explained that he was trying to push industrial development toward the Orangeburg side of the county in an effort to draw traffic on I-26 away from Charleston.

In other news, Scott Street residents John and Linda Common finally caught a photo of a Barred Owl that they had been hearing for years. The dense wooded area behind the Common’s home was perfect for birds like the Barred Owl, who prefers swampy forests or the mixed woods of river bottoms. The bird gets its name from the pattern of brown “bars” on his feathers and is typically seen at dusk or dawn. Often called the “virtuoso” of the breed, the Barred Owl is known for its distinctive, squeaky call.

In sports, Jelena Jankovic won the 2007 Family Circle Cup, defeating Dinara Safina, 6-2, 6-2.

FIVE YEARS AGO - DANIEL ISLAND DENTIST TEAMED UP WITH BLIND RIDER FOR TANDEM BIKE RIDE FOR CHARITY

In the April 19, 2012 edition of the paper we featured Daniel Island dentist and avid cyclist Michael Bannister as he teamed with Keith Johnson, who lost his eyesight in 2010, in a 24-hour tandem bike event to raise money for the Charleston Association for the Blind.

In other news, just as in this week’s paper, we featured the Charleston Home + Design Show. Five years ago marked the first time the event was held on Daniel Island. Previously the event was held at the Galliard but moved to Daniel Island when the Galliard closed for renovations.
