TEN YEARS AGO - Tim Callanan runs for Berkeley County District 2 seat
In the April 26, 2007 issue of the Daniel Island News, the annual Bocce Bash was highlighted with photos from the event. The Bocce Bash event still takes place today and is scheduled for May 20 at the MUSC Health Stadium on Daniel Island. The event benefits Special Olympics.
In politics, Tim Callanan and Richard Smith were top vote getters in the first round of the Berkeley County District 2 Republican primary that was held on April 17 of that year. A runoff election was set for May 1, in which Callanan won. He has since resigned from that position and is now Deputy Supervisor of Administration with Berkeley County Government.
FIVE YEARS AGO - Dee Norton Lowcountry Children's Center advocates for children
The feature story in the April 26, 2012 issue of the Daniel Island News was about the Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center. The DNLCC is a remarkable child advocacy center in downtown Charleston, serving tri-county children who are victims of abuse and neglect. To this group of advocates, awareness is an active exercise in attentiveness, recognition, and sensibility. And that’s the kind of awareness they have been working hard to promote, particularly during April, as it is National Child Abuse Prevention month.
In other news, Lt. Rivers took on the Daniel Island job of Team 5 police commander after it was vacated by Lt. Christine Middleton, who was reassigned to Support Services. This position has since been transitioned again, with Lt. James Byrne taking it over in 2015.
