FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the July 29, 2004 edition of the paper, the centerfold featured articles about preventative medicine and the addition of Prevecare to the Daniel Island business community.

In news, it was reported that Home Telecom acquired Daniel Island Media Company, the primary provider of television, high speed internet and telecommunications on Daniel Island; that Cree Communications, a Charleston-based marketing communications firm, won an APEX 2004 Award of Excellence in the Corporate Capability Materials category for its work on the Passailaigue Homes brochure; and, that the Charleston Police Department hosted a bicycles, skateboards and scooters safety event in the Bishop England parking lot near the track field.

TEN YEARS AGO

In the July 30, 2009 edition of the paper, it was reported that Tracy Doran, president of the Humanities Foundation at the time, would speak at the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association meeting about her organization’s plans to build a 42-unit low-income housing complex for seniors. Dubbed “Seven Farms Village,” the units would be located adjacent to the existing 305 Seven Farms Apartments, also a Humanities Foundation affordable housing initiative.

The centerfold feature spotlighted the efforts involved in keeping Daniel Island beautifully maintained.

In sports, the Daniel Island Get Fit Challenge continued with over 300 people involved in various workouts offered throughout the island. During the first two weeks, weight loss exceeded 400 pounds! Also, the Daniel Island Flying Fish won third place in the City Meet.

FIVE YEARS AGO

An article in the July 31, 2014 edition of the paper featured Daniel Island residents Mary Patterson, owner of Gaia Fit, and Molly May, creator of the community running group “Daniel Island Girls in Training (DIG IT).” At the time, the pair was starting up a local chapter of Girls on the Run. The nationwide program provides fitness activities, games and, of course, running. Through the initiative, girls in third through eighth grade learn real-life tools for fostering self-confidence and exceptional health.

In school news, tax-free weekend dates were announced and there was an article about the City of Charleston’s First Day Festival. The event is held not only to celebrate education, but also to receive school supplies for the new school year. Sponsored by the Mayor’s Office for Children, Youth and Families and the City of Charleston, the school supply drive allows the city to collect donations of school supplies to ensure that students have the materials they need to begin the new school year. This event continues today.
