FIFTEEN YEARS AGO
 
The Aug. 18, 2005, edition highlighted scuba diving. In one article, islander Philippe Gresle described scuba diving as becoming a man unchained. The writer said his eyes twinkle and his face noticeably brightens as Gresle describes the sport he loves. In another article, Kim Mallin described diving as having added a whole other dimension to her life. She said there is nothing quite like the silence and beauty observed while underwater.
 
In other news, a national magazine recognized Daniel Island for what most residents already know — the island is a great place to work and live, no matter your age. Where to Retire magazine recognized Daniel Island as “One of America’s 100 Best Master-Planned Communities” in its July/August issue that year.
 
TEN YEARS AGO
 
On the cover of the Aug. 19, 2010, edition, there was an article by local vet Lynn Flood. She touched on the “dangerous breed” myth. She said certified trainers can administer the temperament test in about 10 minutes, and the results are far superior to using appearance alone in predicting dangerous dogs.
 
The centerspread was all about the art of catching shrimp. Knowing the tricks of the trade can net some good results, as members of the Daniel Island Inshore Fishing Club learned at a meeting where Captain Steve Baysinger of Haddrell’s Point Tackle and Supply in Mount Pleasant demonstrated the proper way to throw a cast net. 
 
In business news, Iron Gate Realty LLC opened with Renee Reinert (Pote) as broker-in-charge. The then new real estate company noted it specialized in working with buyers and sellers on Daniel Island, Mount Pleasant and Isle of Palms.  
 
FIVE YEARS AGO
 
The cover and centerspread of the Aug. 20, 2015, edition were dedicated to the 911 Heroes Run. It was announced that Medal of Honor recipient Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter would be a guest and a runner at that year’s run. In November of 2010, while serving as a U.S. Marine in Afghanistan, Lance Corporal Carpenter, an automatic rifleman with Company F, 2nd Battalion, found himself in the midst of a fierce attack by enemy forces.
 
In school news, it was announced that the Berkeley County Board of Education had selected Brenda Blackburn as the district’s new superintendent.
 
In other school news, there were lots of photos from Back to School night at Daniel Island School.
