TEN YEARS AGO - DI BERKELEY COUNTY LIBRARY DESCRIBED AS 'FIELD OF DREAMS'

In the August 24, 2006 issue of the Daniel Island News, the feature story was about the new Berkeley County Library opening on Daniel Island. Planned to open in January 2007, the 5,000 sq. ft. building was meant to focus on lifelong learning. According to Colleen Carney, the Berkeley Country Library System Director at the time, “[That includes] everything from preparation to learning to read in school, to seniors who are taking classes, to adults doing research for businesses, to entrepreneurs, and of course, for recreational reading of all kinds…”

In Island Life, there was a showcase of pictures from the annual Hootie and the Blowfish concert.

In medical news, Dr. Charlie Turner wrote an article about kids and eyeglasses. With back to school underway, Turner suggested children have their vision checked. “If a child has a blurry image when looking at a blackboard, or difficulty reading, school can be that much more challenging,” said Turner. He also gave tips on what to look for if your child has vision problems. “As a parent you should watch for signs that may indicate a vision development problem, including short attention span, difficulty with eye-hand coordination, avoidance of near tasks like coloring or reading, or any sign of an eye turn in or out.”

FIVE YEARS AGO - PLAN PUTS DI IN FIRST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT

In the August 25, 2011 issue of the Daniel Island News, it was reported that a redistricting plan passed by the South Carolina House and Senate, and signed by Governor Nikki Haley, was approved by the United States Justice Department, which would affect Daniel Island and most of the Clements Ferry Road corridor. As proposed, the island and much of the surrounding Cainhoy area would move from the 6th Congressional District to the 1st Congressional District, territory covered by Rep. Tim Scott (R). “I’m truly excited about the opportunity to earn the right to represent folks on Daniel Island,” said Scott, who recalled working with island residents about 15 years prior during his time on Charleston County Council, when he and his fellow council members tried to determine how to establish the newly developing Daniel Island community as a part of Charleston County (Daniel Island ultimately became part of Berkeley County).
