FIFTEEN YEARS AGO
 
In the Aug. 25, 2005, edition, stories about the vibrant antique and furniture restoration businesses in the Charleston area were featured.
 
In sports news, one of the most well-known Charleston Battery soccer players returned to face his former team. Paul Conway spent the 2005 season playing soccer on the west coast for the Portland Timbers where his dad, Jimmy Conway, was the assistant coach. Conway had ended his seventh year with the Charleston Battery the previous season and began studies at the Charleston Law School. However, after completing his first year of law school, Conway’s desire to play professional soccer was still very much alive and he played the additional year for Portland. Conway and his family still reside on Daniel Island.
 
TEN YEARS AGO
 
In the Aug. 26, 2010, edition, one of the cover stories reported on the opening of Sermet’s Courtyard on Daniel Island at the location previously occupied by Brewer’s Bistro. Still at that location, it was the second restaurant for owner Sermet Aslan.
 
Another story involved former Mayor Riley making a Daniel Island house call. It was reported that, “City of Charleston Mayor Joe Riley is a bit of an old school public servant. As a group of Daniel Island residents recently discovered, he still makes house calls.
 
Formed in December 2008, the Lowcountry Democratic Women’s Caucus on Daniel Island invited the Mayor to speak to their organization at the Smythe Park home of member Marcia Miller last week. Much to their delight, he accepted.”
 
FIVE YEARS AGO
 
News that approximately 50 acres of real estate owned by the South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) on Daniel Island had been officially transferred to the South Carolina Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department (SCPRT) was the Aug. 27, 2015, edition cover feature. The SCPA, former Rep. Jim Merrill and Sen. Larry Grooms announced the completion of a 99-year lease agreement granting oversight of the parcel to the SCPRT for “public benefit.”
 
In political news, Charleston mayoral candidates John Tecklenburg and Ginny Deerin were featured. The other candidates, William Dudley Gregorie and Toby Smith, had been included the previous week. Tecklenburg won the election and is still mayor today.
