FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the August 5, 2004 edition of the paper, the cover and centerfold features revolved around childcare options for preschoolers. Our coverage spotlighted two new childcare facilities in the Daniel Island area - Children’s Nook (opened by Daniel Island resident David Kuczkir) on Clements Ferry Road and Daniel Island Academy on Daniel Island Drive - as well as AuPairCare.

In news, it was reported that construction began on the Daniel Island School as members of the Daniel Island community, Berkeley County School District officials and others gathered for a ground breaking celebration on the future site of the new facility.

Also, it was reported that Daniel Island’s record breaking real estate sales pace continued through the first two quarters of 2004 with approximately 300 sales transactions totaling nearly $120 million – a 38% increase over sales activity in the first half over 2003.

TEN YEARS AGO

In the August 6, 2009 edition of the paper, it was reported that a student participating in an overnight camp at Bishop England High School contracted the NOVEL H1N1 virus, formerly known as the swine flu. It was the first such case to be confirmed on Daniel Island. According to Amy Roach, regional epidemiologist at the time for the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), the 17-year-old female student from out of state was among about 300 teens taking part in a Catholic Heartwork Camp, a program that engages students in faith-powered mission work in the community.

In business news, an article extended a sad farewell to Moo-Na Lisa, the popular island ice cream and coffee shop that closed. The family-friendly gathering place, which opened on the island in 2004 by Daniel Island resident John Moran, served up its last scoops of homemade ice cream on a mid-August day in 2009 as the afternoon hours melted away.

In sports, four Daniel Island Soccer Academy (DISA) players represented South Carolina as part of the SC Youth Soccer Association’s Olympic Development Program (ODP) - Stockton Blanchard –U14, Alan Gore-U18, Jackson Karolczy-U14, and Patrick Khouri-U14.

FIVE YEARS AGO

The centerspread feature in the August 7, 2014 edition of the paper spotlighted mosquitoes and the havoc caused by the pesky insects in the Daniel Island area. Along with information on Berkeley County’s mosquito abatement program, tips were also given on how to help eliminate the bugs in your own yard. “Clean drainage ditches and rain gutters of debris and weeds. Maintain pools with proper chemicals. Empty standing water from containers and changing water in bird baths and flower cuttings at least once per week,” said Jeff Cary of Berkeley County Mosquito Abatement.

In school news, an article targeted ways to handle back to school stress.
