FIVE YEARS AGO

The cover of the Dec. 18, 2014, edition of the paper featured one of the Charleston firefighters who was selected for the 2015 Charleston Animal Society calendar. The animal society invited firefighters to apply, participate in a photo shoot, and ultimately see their photos and video posted on a fundraising page. The campaign ran for a month, and voters pledged a minimum $10 donation to choose their favorite firefighters. It proved a fruitful strategy, as the online voting alone raised over $30,000 for the local nonprofit – and this was before a single calendar was sold.
