FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In a feature article in the Feb. 17, 2005, edition of the paper, Daniel Island Company President Matt Sloan provided answers on the ongoing debate to build an affordable housing complex at the corner of Seven Farms Drive and Daniel Island Drive. He explained that the development agreement between the Daniel Island Company and the city required that 5% of residential units on Daniel Island be dedicated to affordable housing. He also noted that the housing complex was intended for working people who were not on government assistance. The paper reported that residents were organizing to oppose construction of the project.

The cover and centerfold were dedicated to local maritime attractions including the Charleston Aquarium, the Anna Marie pirate ship at the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, and local shipwright Bill Thomas-Moore, who built the Blackbeard’s pirate ship model in the lobby of the former Queen Anne’s Restaurant.

TEN YEARS AGO

In the Feb. 18, 2010, edition of the paper, the cover featured stories about the local job market, including an article on the newly launched Charleston Works Web, which had a listing of knowledge-based companies and links to job postings. Additionally, readers shared advice on navigating the tight job market.

The centerfold featured a spread of photos about the local snowstorm that hit the area on Feb. 12-13. More than 300 photos were submitted to the paper as the Lowcountry became a winter wonderland.

FIVE YEARS AGO

In the Feb. 19, 2015, edition of the paper, the cover and centerfold focused on getting to know the island better. In the article titled, “Walk around Daniel Island. Do you see what I see,” several local experts were invited to note observations of the same city block on Daniel Island. Their journey began at the intersection of Seven Farms Drive and River Landing Drive, and continued down Seven Farms Drive toward the Family Circle Tennis Center (now LTP and Volvo Car Stadium). They took a left on Island Park Drive and followed the street back to River Landing, taking a left at LIDI Restaurant before returning to the starting point. The experts — a photographer, a minister, a policeman, a land planner, a realtor and a master gardener — shared what they noticed along the way.

In school news, Brielle Kociolek, an eighth-grade science teacher at Daniel Island School, was named Teacher of the Year.
