FIFTEEN YEARS AGO
 
In the Feb. 23, 2006, issue, a report featured the city’s open access wireless fidelity, or Wi-Fi, system which was reportedly the first of its kind in the nation and began in downtown Charleston. Surely a sign of the times, the article featured a Blackberry device and mentioned using the system from your PDA.
 
The National Audubon Society reported they were still interested in establishing a wildlife oasis on Daniel Island. At the time, Audubon South Carolina State Director Norman Brunswig said his organization discussed buying or leasing approximately 200 acres of State Ports Authority land on Daniel Island. 
 
TEN YEARS AGO
 
In the Feb. 24, 2011, issue, the top news story was the election of new officers to the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association. Mac McBride and Al Vitalo took on the roles of president and treasurer.
 
In business news, SPARC, a software development and systems integration company, relocated their corporate office to 2387 Clements Ferry Road. 
 
In school news, programs at College Park Elementary, Daniel Island School, Hanahan High, and Hanahan Elementary were named “Recognized ASCA Model Programs” by the American School Counselor Association. 
 
FIVE YEARS AGO
 
The feature story in the Feb. 25, 2016, issue, shared the conceptual plan for Saint Clare of Assisi’s church campus at the corner of Etiwan Park and Seven Farms Drive. The article suggested construction would commence when a minimum of 50% of the funds needed are in the bank. An estimate for the church alone was $10 million. Construction is now underway today.
 
With a plan to create a new traffic rotary at the intersection of Daniel Island Drive and Seven Farms Drive, the paper took a look at Mount Pleasant roundabouts. With more than 15 in place, Paul Lykins, transportation project engineer for the town at the time, said in most cases they have been well received.
