FIFTEEN YEARS AGO
 
In the Feb. 24, 2005, edition of the paper, the cover and centerfold featured stories about international trade, focusing on the Foreign Trade Zones and the opening of the South Carolina World Trade Center.
 
In top news, former Charleston Mayor Joe Riley reiterated his commitment to affordable housing on Daniel Island. Riley said the city “agreed and committed to do it as part of a range of housing” that was part of the development agreement between the city and The Daniel Island Company. He viewed it as a “good faith requirement” and felt a “great responsibility” to bring affordable housing to Charleston in general, and Daniel Island in particular.
 
TEN YEARS AGO
 
In the Feb. 25, 2010, edition of the paper, the cover featured a story about Viki Fernandez, who was named Daniel Island School’s Teacher of the Year.
 
The centerfold featured residents giving reviews of desserts from each of the island’s restaurants: Ali Baba’s, Quiznos, Island Town Café, Queen Anne’s Revenge, Vespa Pizzeria, and Brewer’s Bistro. Ten years later, Ali Baba and Vespa are the only ones still open today.
 
In other news, The Daniel Island Company and Providence Baptist Church jointly raised $17,925 to purchase a Water Mission International water filtration system to send directly to Haiti, which had been ravaged by an earthquake.

FIVE YEARS AGO

The cover and centerfold of the Feb. 26, 2015, paper featured three Daniel Island women — Marie Delcioppo, Jaqueline Gowe and Angie Byrd — who were on a mission to help people create healthier habits. Delcioppo’s Lush Vitality focused on the well-being of her clients, while Byrd’s business as a personal life coach helped clients “create an extraordinary life.” Gowe’s businesses focused on learning Italian as well as Italian immersion from healthy cooking, similar to the Mediterranean diet.
 
In other news, the grand opening of the new Benefitfocus Customer Success Center was held on Daniel Island. Those on site to celebrate the new building included Ray August, Benefitfocus COO; former S.C. Governor Nikki Haley; Shawn Jenkins, Benefitfocus President and CEO; Mason Holland, Benefitfocus co-founder; former Mayor Joe Riley; and Andy Howell, Benefitfocus CCO.
