FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the Jan. 13, 2005, edition of the paper, the cover and centerfold featured the popularity and many uses of honey. Honey was featured as a food, as a beauty supplement, beeswax candles, Burt’s Bees products, a biscuit and as a recipe. Sweet!

In sporting news, Daniel Island resident Tracy DeWitt was named the area’s Female Triathlete of the Year. She won three of the four Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series events that year, and didn’t compete in the fourth. She also won the Family Circle Cup Triathlon, the Daniel Island Duathlon, and won her age group at the Isle of Palms Connector Run and the Turkey Day Run.

TEN YEARS AGO

In the Jan. 14, 2010, edition of the paper, the cover featured the appointment of Daniel Island resident and Realtor Angie Johnson to the City of Charleston Planning Commission by Mayor Joe Riley.

In top news, a former Daniel Island investment broker pled guilty to securities fraud and was serving an eight-year prison sentence after being accused of misappropriating approximately $421,000 from his clients.

The centerfold featured a look back at real estate sales on Daniel Island for 2009 and predictions from local experts for 2010.

FIVE YEARS AGO

The centerfold of the Jan. 15, 2015, edition was a spread about the South Carolina Ports Authority’s plans to ensure conservation of the Cooper River corridor, including a harbor deepening project. The SC Ports Authority, Lowcountry Open Land Trust, Coastal Conservation League, and the Southern Environmental Law Center announced they had signed a milestone agreement for the Charleston Harbor Port Deepening Project that included a significant port contribution to enhance land conservation efforts, improve water quality and protect wildlife along the Cooper River corridor.

In sports, Hanahan High’s Chris Brown, who began his collegiate athletic career at the University of Notre Dame in 2012, had his breakout season as a Fighting Irish receiver in 2014 with 39 receptions, and was second on the team with 548 yards.
