TEN YEARS AGO

In the January 25, 2006 issue of The Daniel Island News, we featured a story on the groundbreaking of the renovation and rededication of the Keith School as a community center. Originally located at the entrance to what is now the Peninsula subdivision, the project was planned to honor the families who pooled their resources and labor 80 years ago to provide a school for the African-Ameri¬can children of Jack Primus Road and other neighborhoods in the then rural area. In business news, Chuck and Arlaana Black were set to open the restaurant Arlaana’s at the present location of the Daniel Island Grille. The building was under construction with plans to open in March, 2006. The Black’s previously owned and operated a restaurant on Edisto Island. The duo was also seeking input from island kids for their kid’s menu. In other news, registration for students at the new Daniel Island School for the inaugural 2006-2007 school year were underway. The paper also featured stories on the power of hugs, with the cover photo of siblings Cole and Grace Powell hugging each other.

FIVE YEARS AGO

In the January 27, 2011 issue of the Daniel Island News, the centerfold featured input from five local real estate agents highlighting the 2010 market on Daniel Island and informing buyers and sellers about what to look for in 2011. Real Estate professionals Renee Reinert, Rick Vale, Scott Campbell, Susan Aviles, and Terry Haas were upbeat but they also noted that foreclosures and short sales would mean higher inventory and lower sales prices for island properties. Other island news included a feature story on members of the island’s “Mothers Know Breast” team, who were gathering at the home of Daniel Island resident Denise Ketterman to celebrate their recognition as a top fundraising teaming for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. In sports news, Coach Paul Runey recently celebrated his 500th win as the girls’ basketball coach at Bishop England.
