FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the Jan. 20, 2005, edition of the paper, the cover and centerfold featured information about local public schools, including construction of the K-8 public school on Daniel Island with news that attendance lines would be drawn at the next school board meeting. A second story featured the attendance explosion at Hanahan Elementary School, in part by the influx of students from Daniel Island, and the need to move fifth grade to Hanahan Middle School.

In business news, Daniel Island received a prestigious award as the nation’s Best Suburban Smart Growth Neighborhood/Community for 2004. Also, it was announced that construction was nearing completion on the new residential condominium community at 254 Seven Farms Drive, built by Trammell Crow Residential, and featuring office and retail space at the street level.

TEN YEARS AGO

In the Jan. 21, 2010, edition of the paper, the cover featured a story about Daniel Island’s connection to the formation and expansion of a new charter school, Palmetto Charter School.

In top business news, the Computer Doctor, owned by Jason Charles, opened for business at an office on Seven Farms Drive.

The Family Circle Tennis Center partnered with the City of Charleston, Daniel Island Company, and Beacon Towers, LLC, to build a cutting-edge facility to enhance AT&T cellular service to Daniel Island via a stealth flagpole cell site that was under construction at Family Circle Stadium (now the Volvo Car Stadium).

Island Life photos featured snapshots from the Kwanzaa Celebration hosted by islander Faith White, with many locals in attendance to honor the late Philip Simmons.

FIVE YEARS AGO

The cover and centerfold of the Jan. 22, 2015, edition of the paper featured Bishop England girls’ basketball coach Paul Runey. With the BE girls’ basketball team victory over Porter-Gaud 61-34, Runey reached the 600 career victory mark. He became only the sixth girls’ basketball coach in state history to reach the milestone.

In business news, the freshly constructed 145,800-square-foot building housing Benefitfocus officially opened on Monday, Jan. 12, when about 500 employees moved in to start operations.
