FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the July 8, 2004 edition of the paper, the cover and centerfold spotlighted boating our local waterways, including a feature about the dangers of mixing boating with alcohol. The issue also included an article about the Beresford Creek Boat Landing (the only one on Daniel Island at the time), as well as a list of the public boat landings in Charleston and Berkeley County. It was also reported that the city was planning to build a boat landing near the Family Circle Tennis Center (now called LTP) under the I-526 bridge. This project was tabled.

In sports news, several Daniel Island youth competed in the 2004 Wachovia Junior Hard-Court Championships held at the University of South Carolina. The Flying Fish prepared for their first City Meet and the Battery advanced in the U.S. Open Cup.

TEN YEARS AGO

In the July 9, 2009 edition of the paper, the centerfold featured ways area residents could beat the heat to stay cool in the Charleston summer heat. Our favorite answer was from resident Rex Gerding: “I think about a January day in Nebraska.”

There were also photos of the island-wide Fourth of July celebration, as well as of the Abby’s Friends Gala.

Daniel Island Company President Matt Sloan wrote a developers’ update column, suggesting that since real estate was the first area to slow during the recession, it would be one of the first areas to recover. “One thing is for certain – Daniel Island is poised to make a quick rebound,” he noted. “Our lifestyle, coastal setting, amenities and product mix make us a highly desirable location within Charleston, and the sales professionals at Daniel Island Real Estate report that our pipeline of possible buyers includes a healthy number who are ready and waiting for the right time to buy.”

FIVE YEARS AGO

In the July 10, 2014 edition of the paper, the feature article focused on thefts from unlocked Daniel Island cars. The crimes prompted concerns about gun safety after two firearms were taken from unsecured vehicles. In light of these thefts, and similar cases across the Charleston region, police were urging gun owners to remember to lock up weapons to ensure the community’s safety.

The centerspread featured a picture collage of all the Fourth of July festivities on the island. In the days leading up to Independence Day that year, an approaching tropical storm threatened to ruin any outdoor activities, but the storm ended up just grazing the area with its short showers and mild winds before turning into a hurricane (Arthur) and walloping the coast of North Carolina.

It was also reported that the Humanities Foundation, in partnership with Lite House Partners, Inc. of Fayetteville, Georgia, would be offering a summer camp program for the residents of Seven Farms Village. The kids would also be able to enjoy the camp with help from a grant from the Daniel Island Community Fund.
