TEN YEARS AGO - Beat the heat!

In the July 12, 2007 issue of The Daniel Island News, the feature story highlighted ways to stay cool in the summer. Tips included finding shade, eating something cool, investing in water inflatables, heading to the mountains and taking a dip in the local pools.

In sports news, hometown favorite Shelby Rogers, who had just finished her freshman year at First Baptist Church School, was ranked as the No. 1 South Carolina player and 50th top player for the U.S. Girls Class of 2010, according to www.tennisrecruiting.net. On June 5, 2007 she won her fifth singles title at the Wachovia Palmetto Closed Championships in Belton, S.C. and teamed to win the girls’ 18 doubles crown. Check out our story about Shelby’s recent Wimbledon victories on page 23 of this issue!

We also featured several Daniel Island residents who participated in the golf Pro-Am during the LPGA Ginn Tribute at Rivertowne.

FIVE YEARS AGO - Golfers for Education project expands

In the July 12, 2012 issue of The Daniel Island News, we featured a story about the Golfers for Education project (GFE). The mission behind the GFE project was to give kids the time, tools, and recognition they needed to succeed in education, and ultimately, in life. In 2012, GFE was celebrating its 5th anniversary of service. In 2007, they formed their group, which consisted mostly of Daniel Island retirees who enjoyed golf (although that is not a requirement), as a way to give back to students. They started at Daniel Island School, where they adopted the classroom of a first grade teacher, providing volunteer hours and donations to cover supply needs. Teaching young children to read, they have discovered, is critical.

In the issue, we also published pictures of kids playing in our local pools. With summertime in full force, and the addition of a new pool this year, we hope your children are enjoying the same kind of fun today.
