TEN YEARS AGO - Golf cart rules

The July 19, 2007 issue of The Daniel Island News featured an article about golf cart rules. Sgt. Steven Scholz, the administrative sergeant for Daniel Island-based Team 5 of the City of Charleston Police Department at the time, provided us with a copy of the South Carolina statute concerning golf carts. According to Section 56-3-115, golf cart drivers must have a valid driver’s license, must obtain proof of insurance, and must register the vehicle with the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. The law goes on to state that golf carts can be operated on a “secondary highway or street within two miles of [the driver’s] residence or place of business during daylight hours only.” Sgt. Scholz noted that all roads on Daniel Island are considered secondary, even the community’s main roads. “While it may not be illegal to operate a golf cart on roads such as Seven Farms Drive, Island Park Drive, or Daniel Island Drive, those roads are heavily traveled and often traveled by large SUV’s and construction vehicles,” added Scholz. “With this type of traffic and due to the fact that golf carts do not possess the same safety equipment that vehicles do, extreme caution and good common sense should be used when traveling these streets, especially with small children as passengers.”

In other news, local real estate agent Sally Castengera was the spotlight in a story about her career with the Daniel Island Real Estate (DIRE) team. Castengera started with the company in 1996, after being invited by then DIRE General Manager John Poston to join a small sales force pre-selling homes on the island. “When we started, there were no model homes, not even a good dirt road,” Castengera recalled at the time, noting that the three-person staff worked out of a doublewide trailer on Daniel Island Drive. “We were literally selling a dream and a prospect of a lifestyle of living in an island town that had been proposed. The only thing here when we started was the Blackbaud building.” Castengera is still an active member of DIRE and in 2016 celebrated 20 years with the company.

FIVE YEARS AGO - Take me out to the ballgame

In the July 19, 2012 issue of The Daniel Island News, an article about the Charleston Riverdogs baseball games served as the main feature. The story focused on different types of theme nights and charities that benefit from the games. “We have our staples, like Thirsty Thursday dollar beers, which is something that most Minor Leagues do,” explained the Radio Broadcaster and Director of Media Relations for the Riverdogs at the time, Sean Houston. “But we try to pride ourselves on being very creative in terms of giveaways and promo nights.”

Also in the news was the announcement of an application for approval of “Simmons Park,” a four-story, 267 unit apartment complex being developed by Spectrum Properties, the same developer of the Talison Row apartments located at the end of Seven Farms Drive. In addition to the residential units, the project also provided for 6000 square feet of retail/office leasing space, 440 parking spaces in a covered parking garage and on the street, and two parks. The Simmons Park apartment community opened in 2015.
