TEN YEARS AGO - Where to hike locally?

In the May 31, 2007 issue of The Daniel Island News, the feature article was all about places in the Lowcountry to go hiking. Our very own Daniel Island and its many paths were highlighted, with a focus on its 4,000 plus acres and more than 23 miles of rivers, creeks and waterways. “Our trail system provides someone who may not live on the marsh or on the water an opportunity to experience that,” explained the Daniel Island Company’s Jeff Elliott, who was involved in the design and construction of island infrastructure, as well as all parks, open spaces, and streetscapes.

Palmetto Islands County Park in Mount Pleasant was mentioned as well, as it is just a short drive from Daniel Island. The 943-acre park, located off Long Point Road on Needlerush Parkway, has hiking trails with scenic views of adjacent marshes as well as local creeks. Step beneath the park’s lush canopy of palmetto trees and memories of traffic congestion on I-526 quickly evaporate.

A bit further up the road is Bull Island, which is part of the 64,000-acre Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge and only accessible by boat. While the ferry to the island for many may seem a means to an end, it offers one of the best Lowcountry nature lessons around.

FIVE YEARS AGO - The Annual Rotary Duck Race

In the May 31, 2012 issue of The Daniel Island News, the center spread featured the Annual Rotary Club Duck Race. The race began on Daniel Island in 2007, after island Rotary member Bart Jackson suggested the club look into the idea. Since then, the effort has raised more than $1 million for a variety of local and global causes, such as Angel Flight, East Cooper Community Outreach, East Cooper Meals on Wheels, as well as Rotary’s international work for Water Missions International and Polio.

In other news, we reported about the approaching hurricane season and what residents should be doing to get prepared. History teaches us that a lack of hurricane awareness and preparation are common threads among all major hurricane disasters. Families, individuals, and businesses who know their vulnerability and what actions to take can reduce the effects of a hurricane disaster. Information on the different types of severe weather is available at scemd.org, www.weather.gov, www.ready.gov or the Spanish-language web site www.listo.gov.
