TEN YEARS AGO - Remembering Hurricane Hugo

In the June 21, 2007 issue of The Daniel Island News, we featured Wando resident Earl Shaw, and his wife, Rosa, who were living across from St. James AME Church on St. Thomas Island Drive in 1989 when Hurricane Hugo hit. The hurricane not only cut a devastating swath through South Carolina coastal communities, its fury is forever stamped in the memories of those who rode out the storm.

“Trees were down all over, blocking the road,” Earl recalled. “The road onto Daniel Island was totally blocked by trees. It looked like someone had taken a bulldozer through and knocked everything down. Part of our roof was gone and we put a tarp over it until I could get it fixed.”

In other news, Daniel Island’s Debbie Costa landed a prizewinning 30.9-pound wahoo at the Governor’s Cup Edisto Marina Billfish Tournament back in 2007. It was her first-ever offshore sport-fishing tournament and her two trophy-size wahoos qualified her for third place in the best female angler category. She also was best female angler in the tourney’s Calcutta auction, which is an ancillary betting pool held in conjunction with team competition.

FIVE YEARS AGO - Lightning strikes house on Blakeway Street

In the June 21, 2012 issue of The Daniel Island News, our feature story was about teens finding summer jobs. On Daniel Island alone, scores of young people have found a wide variety of income-producing jobs. Some of the jobs we included were babysitting, island summer kids camps, local restaurants and working at the grocery store.

In island news, there was a report of lightning striking the home of Dale and Donna Corcoran on Blakeway Street. Dale was home at the time of the strike, which hit the couple’s water heater. Fortunately, no one was injured. Fire and Police units were called to the scene immediately. The Corcorans’ daughter and granddaughter had just arrived that same day for a visit.
