FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the June 3, 2004 edition of the paper, the feature article spotlighted the re-internment of 19th century remains by the Lesesne family in the cemetery located behind the Family Circle Tennis Stadium now Volvo Car Stadium.

The paper also published a story about the plans to build a new Cooper River Bridge (which is now the Arthur Ravenel). Additionally, there was an article about a play to be performed on Daniel Island about the life of Philip Simmons.

A political news story informed readers about the candidates for U.S. Senate. Republicans running at the time included Jim DeMint, Thomas Ravenel, Charlie Condon and David Beasley. Democratic candidates included Inez Tennenbaum and Ben Frasier.

TEN YEARS AGO

In the June 4, 2009 edition of the paper, it was reported that The Humanities Foundation had plans in the works to build a 42-unit affordable senior housing complex on land adjacent to the existing affordable housing initiative on Daniel Island, Seven Farms Apartments. In crime news, a former Daniel Island investment broker was arrested by City of Charleston Police for breach of trust with fraudulent intent in an Al Parish-like Ponzi scheme.

In other news, Daniel Island-based Lucia’s Premium Pets was actively involved in rescuing and helping to place a malnourished dog that was one of several taken by Animal Rescue and Relief, Inc., from a home off Clements Ferry Road.

Island Life photo spreads included Hello!Daniel Island at The Battery soccer game, a Memorial Day Concert, concerts at the Family Circle Tennis Stadium (now Volvo Car Stadium), and life on Daniel Island. The feature centerfold spread showcased the winning pictures from the paper’s “Color My World” photo contest.

FIVE YEARS AGO

The centerspread in the June 5, 2014 edition of the paper featured a picture collage from the “History Under the Stars” Family Movie Night and Campout, sponsored by the Daniel Island Historical Society and the Daniel Island Property Owners Association. More than 75 Daniel Island families gathered at Smythe Park for the second annual event.

In other news, there was an informative article about island snakes. Matthew Horry, a naturalist at Cypress Gardens in Moncks Corner at the time, broke down the roster of venomous snakes indigenous to our area. Though there are a half dozen, the most commonly spotted on Daniel Island are copperheads and rattlesnakes, with water moccasins close behind.

In political news, there was a rundown of candidate profiles for the U.S. Senate June primary.
