TEN YEARS AGO - Red-tailed hawk rescued

In the June 7, 2007 issue of The Daniel Island News, we reported that a baby red-tailed hawk was rescued from a Daniel Island yard. The seven-week-old hawk had apparently fallen from his parents’ nest, located about 60 to 70 feet up in a pine tree in the woods behind the home of a Daniel Island resident. The program director for the International Center for Birds was contacted and came to rescue the bird. In order to care for him, the professional caretakers dressed in camouflage and used a “puppet” technique by holding a stuffed red-tailed hawk to feed him. “The whole idea is to not have them think that the only way they get food is from a human,” explained the program director. If you spot an injured bird, contact the International Center for Birds of Prey at 843-928-3494, or visit their website, www.internationalbirdsofprey.org, for additional information.

In other news, we also reported that eight Ryland Square penthouses, located at 225 Seven Farms Drive, were for sale by Carriage Properties real estate agents Jane Smith and Thomas Bennett. Prices ranged from $575,000 to $890,000.

FIVE YEARS AGO - Annual Charleston Duck Race

In the June 7, 2012 issue of The Daniel Island News, the feature story was on the Annual Charleston Duck Race, which will take place this weekend, June 10. The Rotary Club of Daniel Island estimated that between 900-1000 people attended the race that year and enjoyed a beautiful day on the Wando at the Daniel Island Children’s Park. Numerous vendors provided a variety of food and drinks for attendees while children enjoyed a jump castle and games along with face painters and a balloon specialist, who made the kids hats and animals while they waited for the duck race to begin. We hope you plan to come out to support this important charity event this Saturday.

Also, featured on the cover was the welcoming of native Charlestonian Jane Baker as the new Daniel Island POA Vice President of Community Services, a post she officially assumed on June 12, 2012. The position was previously held by Jimmy Bailey, who left to take a similar post with the Kiawah Island Community Association. Baker had served as Deputy Director of Planning, Preservation, and Sustainability for the City of Charleston, as well as Special Projects Manager for then Mayor Riley, before coming to Daniel Island. She is also the former Director of Neighborhood Services for the city, a role requiring oversight of, and communication with, 105 neighborhood associations.
