TEN YEARS AGO

In the March 9, 2006 issue we featured a story about a Daniel Island resident, Charles H. Van Rysselberge, who headed up the Charleston Chamber of Commerce. In other important news, the intersection of Clements Ferry Road and Interstate 526 was beginning to take shape under the city of Charleston’s comprehensive plan as a gathering place designation, which was a relatively new zon-ing classification calls for a mix of offices, stores and residences. The city had been annexing properties around the intersection, and development plans for the southwest corner had moved through most of the applicable city boards of approval. According to city planner Christopher Morgan, they expected construction work to begin that year. The city also annexed about 12 acres on the northeastern corner late in 2005, and Charleston City Council was in the process of zoning that land as a gathering place. In sports, 10-year-old Austin Heinz captured the boys’ 2006 SMASH Junior Cup 12-year-old division title held at Family Circle Cup Tennis Center.

FIVE YEARS AGO

In the March 10, 2011 issue of The Daniel Island News, the top news story was the post fire investigation of the blaze at 899 Island Park Drive, which displaced Parkwood Pediatrics, Crescent Moon Orthodontics, Coastal Kids Dental, Goal Marketing, Swisslog Healthcare Solutions, Samuel Shapiro and Company, Inc., and the landlord, Grove Property Fund. All businesses were seeking to relocate and were thankful for community support and help. In the How’s Business feature, we profiled Katharine Matthews, owner of Lucia’s Premium Pet. One gem of advice she shared about staring your own business: “Make sure you are completely obsessed with the mission of your business. If I wasn’t 100% committed to helping improve the lives of animals, I would never have made it in this business.”
