DI News History - March 5, 2020

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the March 3, 2005, edition of the paper, the cover and centerfold featured island chefs and their favorite recipes. Back then, there were only a few dining options. The article included responses from Orlando’s, Soda Water Grill (which was the previous tenant where Vespa is now located), Queen Anne’s Revenge (which changed to The Islander and is now vacant), and Sienna (which is now Ristorante LIDI.)

In top news, more than 155 islanders enjoyed the Eighth Annual Progressive Scrambled Supper. Ten years ago, residents from every neighborhood on the island participated and host homes were spread throughout the island.

Also, more than 200 Daniel Island homeowners gathered to share information about the planned 72-unit affordable housing project and to discuss alternative approaches to present to developers.

TEN YEARS AGO

In the March 4, 2010, edition, the cover featured a story about islander Daniel Bladykas, who planned to skateboard over 60 miles from Esom, Georgia, to Smyrna, Georgia, to raise money for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Also on the cover, an article described Daniel Island residents gathered at the home of Lynn and Chris Cobb for a special visit from “Papy” Smith Johnson, a Haitian resident who traveled to the Charleston area to take part in a special outreach mission on behalf of his country.

In other news, three new businesses opened: CrossFit Discovery, Momentum Marketing, and Vitetta Law Firm.

In sports, Daniel Island School’s middle school boys’ basketball team defeated Charleston Day, 32-29, to win the Division II senior boys championship.

FIVE YEARS AGO

The cover article of the March 5, 2015, edition of the paper was about a new event to showcase the island’s live oak trees. The Daniel Island Historical Society encouraged residents and businesses with live oak trees on their properties to illuminate them for a special “Live Oak Lights Tour.”

The centerfold focused on wellness in the workplace at Daniel Island-based companies such as Blackbaud, Benefitfocus, and 843 Benefits. From yoga classes to boot camps to nutritional seminars, these local businesses encouraged healthy living in the workplace and realized being fit-focused helps employees and is also good for business.
