TEN YEARS AGO – Beach bodies invade Daniel Island

In the May 8, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News, an article featured the beach volleyball tournament (AVP Charleston Open) that would be coming to Daniel Island. The second annual AVP Charleston Open, which was South Carolina’s only professional beach volleyball tournament, would bring more than 150 top men and women players, including U.S. Olympic gold medalists and the biggest superstars of the game to battle for more than $200,000 in prize money during the May tournament on Daniel Island.

In school news, then sixth-grader Logan Williams received the Governor’s Citizenship Award for the Daniel Island School. The program honored one student from each participating school for outstanding service, leadership, responsibility, character, and discipline. Each winner received a Governor’s Citizenship Award certificate and a Governor’s Medal of Citizenship at a recent awards luncheon held at the State House in Columbia.

FIVE YEARS AGO – Daniel Island Inshore Fishing Club celebrates 10 years

The feature article in the May 9, 2013 issue of The Daniel Island News was a tribute to the Daniel Island Inshore Fishing Club’s 10 year anniversary. Ron Silverman, DIIFC founder, explained that the concept of the club was not just about catching fish, but to form a club that would bring island fisherman and their families together through monthly meetings, fishing activities, and social events, with an emphasis on making new friends, learning more about fishing from each other and from guest speakers, and participating in conservation efforts.

In art and music news, there was an article about Clay Rice, an acclaimed silhouette artist, who would be bringing his talents to Daniel Island for the first time for an event at the Daniel Island Club.

Clay would feature his silhouette artistry, as well as storytelling and a musical performance, in “An Evening of Lowcountry-style Entertainment” presented by the Daniel Island Historical Society and the Daniel Island Community Fund.

“The Daniel Island Community Fund proudly partners with island clubs and organizations to try and bring interesting cultural opportunities and events to Daniel Island to benefit our residents,” added Jane Baker, vice president of community services for the Daniel Island Property Owners Association. “We are thrilled to be partnering this summer with the Daniel Island Historical Society to bring renowned Lowcountry artist and author Clay Rice to the Daniel Island Club!”
