TEN YEARS AGO - Will Daniel Island get a YMCA?

In the May 17, 2007 issue of the Daniel Island news, it was reported that a flagship YMCA facility would be coming to the Charleston region and could possibly land on Daniel Island. Craig Schmitt, senior program director for the YMCA of Greater Charleston at the time said, “The position of the [YMCA] board right now is that the flagship YMCA needs to be in the community with the highest growth numbers.”

The organization’s current “main” site is its Cannon Street YMCA in downtown Charleston. According to Schmitt, their new facility would most likely be about 55,000 square feet and would include features such as a pool, workout center, and gymnasium. At the time, Daniel Island could have been in the running, Schmitt said, if there was a strong show of support for YMCA programs. However, the initiative never came to be as the Cannon Street facility is still the only site in Charleston.

In other news, a little secret was let out of the bag about the United States Post Office branch located at 3282 Highway 41 in Huger. This little gem comes in handy still today and can save yourself a trip to the Mt. Pleasant post office or the post office on River’s Avenue. The Huger office will even handle your passport. Just give them a call and set up an appointment. You will even save on your P.O. Box there and their rates beat out North Charleston and Mt. Pleasant.

FIVE YEARS AGO - Concert in the Park

In the May 17, 2012 issue of the Daniel Island News, our center spread was a collage of pictures from the Concert in the Park. The tradition of the Smythe Park event continues this year on May 27.

There was also an article spotlighting the Daniel Island Inshore Fishing Club and how the club came to be. In November of 2002, Ron Silverman wrote a “concept paper” for the club and got it approved by the Daniel Island Property Owners Association. And on January 15, 2003, the first meeting of the Daniel Island Inshore Fishing Club was held to invite membership and outline its mission. Orvis-endorsed Charleston native Captain Richard Stuhr was the first guest speaker. Julian Levin, club president at the time, bragged on the fact that islanders can fish here without a boat; the harbor shore and area ponds offer great fishing-on-foot. For more information on the club now you can visit www.danielislandinshorefishing.com.
