FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the Nov. 11, 2004 edition of the paper, the cover and centerfold revolved around art and dining. In the fall of 2004 there were 11 dining options on Daniel Island, up from six the year prior. Island restaurants were: Subway, Island Town Coffee and Ice Cream, Dragon Palace, Laura Alberts, Moo-Na Lisa, Orlando’s, Potts of Coffee, Queen Anne’s Revenge, Vincent’s Pizzeria, Sienna, and Soda Water Grill. Four of those restaurants are still here today.

In voting news, it was reported that the unofficial voter turnout on Daniel Island for that year’s presidential race was astronomical, with 77% of registered Daniel Island precinct voters participating in the election on Nov. 2, 2004.

In other news, Berkeley County provided a new ambulance to serve Daniel Island and the surrounding communities. The vehicle was housed at Station 18 at the Daniel Island Marina.

TEN YEARS AGO

In the Nov. 12, 2009 edition of the paper, there was a special report on the cover and throughout the paper on how to cope with holiday stress. The special included a piece by island psychologist Barbara Fowler on how to set goals and keep it simple, and another piece by island psychologist Susan West, who offered tips on how to focus on the meaning of the holidays. Readers also chimed in, answering a survey and sharing thoughts on how to relieve holiday stress.

In island news, the biking and skateboard ordinance that would allow bikes, skateboards and inline skates to be used on Daniel Island sidewalks and roadways, where they were currently prohibited by city ordinance, was moving through city council.

Island Life included photos from Light the Night and from the Daniel Island Fall Market, featuring local artisans and businesses displaying their wares at the Daniel Island School.

FIVE YEARS AGO

In the Nov. 13, 2014 edition of the paper, the cover depicted a tribute to Veterans Day with a photo of a new flag pole at Summit Place. The Cathedral of Praise Veteran’s Ministry helped assemble and raise the new flag pole. Also, there was an article about flag display etiquette with tips for flying the American flag.

In election news, Mac McQuillin was elected to represent District 2 on Berkeley County School Board.

In school news, Lauren Chambers, the new head of physical education at Daniel Island School at the time, was heading the school wellness committee. The committee was charged with carrying out the school’s inaugural year of participation in the MUSC Boeing Center for Children’s Wellness Checklist program.

In sports, the Bishop England High School football season ended with a playoff loss to Andrews.
